Oscar De La Hoya-Pernell Whitaker Build Up Feature

^ Oh look Pete was caught with an uppercut. Oh look Oscar was the only one to hit the canvas...hey we can play this game all day. What are you ganna do count all the punches Oscar landed? Because i'll tell you something it'll be easier to count the ones he landed than the ones he missed, the misses were THAT many. Flapping his arms about and not landing a glove on an old crack head.

Here's the deal with that fight. Like i said it could've gone either way, it was THAT close. Pete won the ring generalship, he controlled the pace of the fight, his defense was spot on, he took away Oscar's lead hand. But he was at a stage where he could still make you miss but not make you pay as much.

Oscar was more aggressive, although it wasn't all that effective. He probabily landed more power punches. Got a BS deduction in his favour. But he didn't do much to steal it either.

It was just one of those fights, where in an ideal world the champ would keep his title and there would be a rematch, but we understand the situation and the moneymaker on his way up gets the decision. No robbery, it was what it was.

 

And rocked pernell again at the end of the round with an uppercut then a left hook. Oscar landed quite a few good punches throughout the fight. Pernell was dirty too.

 

His glove touched the canvas and was obviously off balance. He wasn't stunned, hurt or anything and if I remember right, it wasn't even a clean punch. Pernells swollen shut eye was from a punch though

 

Whitaker was awesome on the night. Clowned a younger bigger man when he was pat his prime.

 

I love going back n watching these build ups then watching the fight afterwards all pumped like its a live fight :yep

 

Making someone miss does not impress me at all when you don't land much yourself. I don't think he embarrassed Oscar.

 

THis whole "Pea was robbed" BS is one of the biggest myths in boxing.

I don't think it was as nuts and he got the rematch, but nonetheless. He was on his way to a loss to Hurtado too obviously had he not come up 'clutch' in the 11th. To give credit to Oscar - who I view as an ATG - Pernell was up for that one a helluva lot more than Rivera/Hurtado fights and summoned what he had left.

 

Whitaker atleast landed a jab all night. What did dlh do? Raise his hand after every round? Flurry at air with 30 secs left in every round? Id say landing a consistant jab all night and dropping a guy is enough for the champ to retain his title.

pernells eye was swollen from a headbbutt in round 3 or 4.

 

I remember ODLH punching air all night and waving his hands after each round trying to persuade the judges.

 

Had Whitiker spent more time on offense than on defense he might have won that fight .
