One of the most famous yet controversial fights in boxing history. Both ODLH and Trinidad were unbeaten at the time. To this day do you still think ODLH was robbed blind or did Trinidad deserve the nod? Who would you have favored had they fought a second time? This content is protected
I think it's a robbery in one aspect that I don't see an argument for Tito actually winning the fight. But in another aspect I don't think it's a robbery due to how close the fight was and I think Tito has a legit argument for a draw. Overall it's 7-5 to ODLH or a draw.
Exactly how I scored the fight. Still not sure why they didn’t pursue an immediate rematch. It would have surely made a lot of money and perhaps gotten a clear winner.
I loved the way Oscar jabbed and moved in this bout. Whilst he wasn't trained by Rivero at this time, the influence was still obvious.
A draw or 115-113 either way fine. First two rounds nothing happened, both feel-out’s. Oscar was a clear winner in 3, 6, 7, 8 and it felt like 5, whereas Tito a clear winner in rounds 4 , 9, 10, 11, 12. A rematch would have been at 154 where Tito no longer struggled to make weight and Oscar probably would have been forced to stand and fight more. He didn’t trade hooks once in their fight, so if he goes toe-to-toe the way he did vs. Mosley, he gets beaten clearly.
Tito had been killing himself to make 147 for some time & was going to move up no matter what IIRC. I suppose DLH didn't want to follow him up there, & he seemed more concerned w/ repairing his public image after all the criticism he got for "running" from Tito, which eventually led to the slugfest w/ Mosley.
I separate friendship or fandom from scoring. Watching live at the time I felt the same way, that’s way before I became friends with him. At the time, HBO’s professional judge had it even (and they always back their house fighter), KO & The Ring had it even and 115-114 Tito, Sky Sports scorer had it Tito by a point, their four man studio of former fighters (three had Tito, one even) had Tito, Japanese television and their pundits had Tito as well. Simply a close fight that was scored for the guy who at least tried to fight for the 12 rounds.
Crazy enough it’s also been 20 years since Bernard Hopkins knocked out ODLH with a well placed liver shot. And it’s also been 26 years since ODLH rematched Chavez and made him retirw on his stool. September 18 was quite a day for ODLH. This content is protected This content is protected
A laughable robbery. A the fact that many people had it 7-5 doesn't make it otherwise. And this was from someone who was delighted Trinidad won. I even stayed up into the night to follow The Guardian's Round-by-Round as it wasn't shown 'live' on Sky or one of the channels I had access to at the time. Then a week later, I got to watch it. Another Don Ming fiddle. Edit: the R-b-R may have been on the TV (Teletext) actually but they definitely did one. Also "Don Ming" was a typo...but fits better.
Oscar didn't do anything in last rounds and wasn't robbed. In second time IMO he would won against Tito.
