Oscar De La Hoya vs Ken Buchanan

Hoya looked scary at this weight... But definitely still full of the same flaws. Hard to say.

 

Delahoya picks apart Buchanan relatively easily and stops him on cuts.

 

Bad matchup for Buchanan, who is a better fighter at LW than DLH. DLH dominates the first half of the fight and does ample damage to Buchanan on account of his physicality, power, speed.

Sometimes I feel the scales were rigged for DLH. He was just so ****in' massive.

 

I think that Buchanan is a finer boxer from a technical standpoint and I think that him in full flow would be beating Oscar. Oscar at 135 was such a physical monster though and his explosiveness could potentially see him through. He had a great jab but I don't think it is as consistent a weapon as that of Kens personally. One other thing, even though it was at 147, a prime Oscar had stylistic difficulties with Whitaker's complete boxing style, and Whitaker was not prime. The main reasons Oscar had problems in that one was not because of a stylistic issue for me, but simply because he wasn't good enough to beat Perneell convincingly. As I say, that was at 147. but a prime Ken was a complete pure boxer stylistically. I think Ken was fantastic at boxing.

 

Agree with this, also Ken has the better jab and Oscar has problems with men with better jabs - Quartey/Sturm. Oscar is quicker though and bigger but he was a bit raw at 135. Ken maybe mixes it up more than he should though.

Maybe another close controversal decision either way?

 

yeah I think a close decision either way is a great call

 

Buchanan has the edge in fundamentals and brains but De La Hoya was an absolute demon at lightweight, as others have said. I think his edges in hand speed and a big edge in power might compensate for his other flaws but I can't see anything but a close decision for either man.

 

Oscar by a fairly wide decision, maybe 9-3 over twelve or 10-5/11-4 over fifteen.

 

Oscar was most unimpressive against John John Molina so I wouldn't say that he was necessarily a terror at the weight. He fought opponents that he was well matched up against in order to look good. Leija, Hernandez, Molina and Paez were all 130 lbers and we know how big of a lightweight De La Hoya was.

 

Wow, Oscar is getting overrated.

 

I think people just look at how Oscar looked before he retired and factor that into some of these match ups. That's the bad thing about fighting past your prime. Oscar was an absolute beast at lightweight and would be a live dog against anyone there. He was a very tall, rangy boxer with a strong jab and one of the best left hooks of all time.

 

Yep. That's it. That's what I was doing. Someone who posts almost exclusively on the Classic Forum is incapable of putting any credence into past boxers. You've got me down to a science.

 

It doesn't matter what forum you post in and its not really something that you can control. Oscar retired taking a serious beating and was made to look like a joke by a much smaller man, and he cherry picked much smaller fighters towards the end (and lost to them) and that's the last memory that most people have in their head of him. I don't see how people picking Oscar to beat Buchanan is "overrating" him.

 

Because he was young and green, taking on overmatched opposition, and here we're pitting up against a borderline great at the weight. People are favouring him based on nothing but physical attributes it seems.

And yeah, that is something that can be controlled. Maybe you can't control it, but that isn't an issue with me.
