Well, Ray Leonard did turn the tide of the fight with a left hook on Hearn's chin that he never recovered from. One can say it might be similar, with DLH having trouble in the early rounds but catching Hearns late. If it became a question of chins and Hearns leaving himself open then I'd give it to DLH. And to the poster above who said Ray Leonard was light years better than DLH it wasn't so in this fight in which Leonard stalked Hearns without being very Sugary. Leonard won by sheer bruteness.
Not to say that Hearns would get beat......But ODH did carry his power late in fights to where Hears has ran out of gas.
It's all well and fine to pick Hearns, as one would expect a majority to do in this match-up - but the disrespect Oscar is copping ITT is staggering. He still gets too harshly criticized on ESB. You'd think three years officially out of the game would see cooler heads prevailing. Nope. Haters still gonna hate.
Oscar's massively underrated here. Don't get me wrong, I think Hearns outboxes him all all likelihood, maybe even stops him, but DLH has a chance to take this too.
I'd favor hearns, conventional wisdom says he outboxes him and punishes him with consistent accurate hard punches. You have to be quite special to beat all that was welterweight Hearns. But considering his style, I could see DLH jabbing with Tommy often, which could open up opportunities for him down the stretch to land a left hook, maybe in combination. We all know what that punch has done to fighters, and while Tommy didn't have a glass chin, he wasn't the strongest around the whiskers. DLH is durable as hell and intelligently aggressive, which could cause problems for Tommy. So I favor Tommy because of the physical advantages, talent, and skill he possessed, but the styles and fighters match-up to make a great fight that could possibly come out a variety of ways.
sorry, i just had to troll at the *****s. seriously though, i like hearns to win by decision on this one. as for those saying oscar can hurt hearns, albeit he has a shaky chin, i don't think dela hoya can put him down.
Fair enough on the first part, disagree on the second. Hearns had a shaky chin, it's probably his biggest draw back, DLH packed a lot of power especially in that hook of his.
I'd say getting hit by Oscar at 147 isn't in the same league as getting hit by Marvin at 160...but it isn't that far off.
Dlh would get stopped by Hearns. Dlh lacked a right hand, and though he had fast hands, Hearns jab, height and reach would be too much to over come. If dlh thought Ike Quarteys jab was a problem...imagine Hearns's jab.
I agree. It's probably not too different from SRL's left-hook, actually. I mean, setting it up, its speed, its angle, that's all different...but the left hook alone is definitely comparable.
