Former Olympic gold medalist and world champion Oscar De La Hoya is not happy with the United States' worst-ever showing in Olympic boxing.

"That's it! I'm going to request Sugar Ray Leonard and myself coach the next Olympic boxing team," De La Hoya, a 1992 gold medalist in Barcelona, tweeted Friday. "I have (too) much passion for the sport I love dearly. Will do something about it!"

Did Freddie Roach coach the team this year? I saw it on his reality show on HBO.

I think he'd be great at it, so would Ray.

Barry Hunter and Freddie provided some consulting for the team members and helped with some team building exercises, but each fighter had their own coach I believe.

    Anyway, yeah, why not?

It was only his heart and desire that he let occasionally get him in trouble or left open to criticism - never his boxing IQ.

If he weren't already rolling in it and the figurehead of a top promotional force in the sport, I could see him having a lot of fun with a coaching gig and doing quite well at it.

As for SRL, wtf else has he got going on? I mean, he had the free time to do The ****ing Contender.. :yep

Oscar truly cares about the face of boxing,he proved that to me when he basically said he can't wait till Bob Arum dies "in so many words" but shows he wants to see quality fights, the sport thrive and continue to grow..

I think it may be a quality issue rather than a coaching one. Generous gesture from Oscar, but if he doesn't have the cattle, nothing's going to change.

The problem is, amateur boxing is dying in the U.S. Young kids and teenagers are more interested in learning how to play basketball, football or MMA. If the U.S. is going to start becoming a force in Olympic boxing again, and heavyweight professional boxing.. it has to start with building up the amateur programs here in the States. Maybe TMT promotions will help make boxing hip again for kids and help regenerate interest in the sport.
