Oscar used to fight like he had a glass jaw, kinda like Floyd does now, but then later (around Mayorga) he didn't seem as worried about getting hit. Hit and don't get hit; he boxed the **** out of Tito before anyone else, but looked scared the whole time. He has an excellent chin, it was his face he was worried about.
kinda like manny today. might of been dropped or even stopped by lesser fighters early in his career, but then he just gets stunned and wobbled by world class punchers like morales and marquez later in his career.
It started to get tested as far back as the Chavez fights though. I don't think people underrate his great chin, just that when they talk about De La Hoya its something they don't talk about much. Oscar was never knocked out to a punch in the face, and how many times can you remember Oscar being knocked down??? Thats right. Lets look at his wars where he took some great shots. Chavez - People remember Chavez being bloodied in both fights because of Oscar's lighting quick combinations, but he did land on Oscar a few times especially in the second fight where Oscar took more shots than he should have and still handled Chavez's power good. Trinidad - Though Trinidad barely did anything against Oscar he still landed some solid power shots down the stretch and Oscar took them like nothing. Quartey - A war, one of the all time great battles in which Oscar ended up the winner, he took everyone of Quartey's best shots and won. (This is the only knockdown against De la Hoya I remember) Mosley I and II - He went toe to toe to hard hitting Mosley and never backed down from his power shots(remember Oscar not being so liked by the mexican public? after his fight with Mosley mexican fans found some new respect for him) Specially the first one where Mosley hit with some great shots yet Oscar got him back with some of his own in exchanges. Vargas - it was a war and Oscar prevailed against a harder hitting fighter and he took Vargas' best shots in that one. Mayorga - Even though Oscar completely overwhelmed him Mayorga still got some very hard shots in to Oscar's forehead and took them head on literally. Hopkins - The late KO in this one was due to a body shot Mayweather - Floyd isn't the most powerful guy around but did you notice Oscar took every punch of Floyd's like they were little pebbles thrown at him? Oscar kept going forward in all 12 rounds. Pacquiao - We all know this fight does not really count in terms of Oscar being the fighter he used to be. He was dehydrated, old, past it and was fighting at 145 which made him anemic looking. Yet Pacquiao, who battered Oscar for 8 rounds was not able to knock him down even if his life depended on it. Oscar took all his shots and his corner finally told Oscar to end it. Great chin, but when people talk about Oscar they focus more on his other great qualities. Never forget the great chin he had.
I think just about everyone knows he had a sturdy chin. He was also not stupid about whom he traded with. He used good movement and boxing to avoid Tito's bombs. He said he was cautious against Quartey because he was a little nervous about his power. Against other fighters, he was more willing to put his jaw in harm's way.
The Quartey fight was not even close to being an all time great battle. It had TWO exciting rounds and ten rounds of posing and staring, with infrequent action. It wasn't even a good chessmatch where one guys makes a mistake and the other makes him pay, with nice traps being set. It was largely both of them just doing nothing.
You can't discredit it though. Oscar still took Quartey's best shots. Even in the 12th round when De La Hoya took the fight and staggered Quartey in the ropes, Quartey tagged Oscar with shots and De La Hoya still managed to get the best of him.
Iron chinned hero emmanuel hit shot and drained Oscar with everything for 8 rounds, but Oscar's knees wouldn't even buckle.
I'm talking about the fight as a whole. The 6th and 12th rounds were excellent, the crowd was lively, but most of the fight was devoid of action.
