Oscar didn`t fight anyone of note in his first few years as a pro,
In his twelfth professional fight, he won his first world title at age 20, stopping Jimmy Bredahl (16–0) in the tenth round to win the WBO super featherweight title. He defended the title once, stopping Giorgio Campanella (20–0) in three rounds. The WBO was not a respected title in the early 90`s and usually very easy to win.
On July 29, 1994, he knocked out Jorge Páez (53–6–4) in the second round to win the vacant WBO Lightweight title. In his first title defense, he defeated John-John Molina (36–3), who had recently vacated his IBF Super Featherweight title, by unanimous decision. Look at Paez`s record when DLH beat him and Molina had three losses by the time the bigger DLH beat him.
On May 6, 1995, De La Hoya defeated IBF lightweight champion Rafael Ruelas (43–1–0) in a unification bout. De La Hoya knocked Ruelas down twice before the fight was stopped in the second round. The IBF then ordered De La Hoya to defend against Miguel Julio.

He relinquished the IBF title and defended the WBO title against undefeated Genaro Hernández (32–0–1), who relinquished the WBA super-featherweight title to fight De La Hoya. Hernandez quit after six rounds because of a broken nose. In his sixth and final defense of the WBO lightweight title, he knocked out Jesse James Leija (30–1–2) in two rounds at New York's Madison Square Garden, three solid fighters but nothing special, DLH was a very big lightweight.

Poor copy/paste job. It's painfully obivous you weren't around or watching boxing back then.

Okay that was just f****** strange LOL

Come on now man you can't seriously be faulting De La Hoya for missing those guys? After all the incredible competition he fought? That is just desperate as all get out.

In regards to missing out on Margarito, that was Oscar's own f*** up. He said he'd fight the winner of Cotto v Margarito, with the concensus expectations it would be Cotto. But when it was Margarito who won, anmd called him out, Oscar said something to the effect of, "Maybe I'll fight Paul Williams since he beat Margarito." Until Paul called him on that. Sometimes Oscar doesn't know when to STFU.

You said "He was suppose to be the biggest star in American boxing since Mike Tyson"
    He was.

Most Fighters talk a lot of BS, and Oscar's no exception. He certainly was relatively quiet mouth compared to the buffoons and morons that parade around on social media today that's for sure.

And again, I couldn't care less about the few guys Oscar missed, he fought many excellent/great Fighters and to say he ducked anyone or doubt his career record just sounds really desperate and ridiculous.

Personally I would have liked to see him v Vernon Forrest after he beat Shane, but Oscar had Gatti (which really shold hat have occured), and moved to 154 just three months later. I was always called an Oscar hater on this board, but can't deny he fought just about everyone realistic or possible. And in case anyone tries to bring up WInky Wright at 154, Winky was offered a career high but wanted more. That killed the fight.

I hear you and agree, I would love to have seen Oscar fight those guys too. But I don't think one can say that Oscars career opponents are overrated that would be kind of a stretch wouldn't you agree?

I would. He's had one of the best resumes since his debut.

Yes definitely an excellent resume, and usually the fights were entertaining.

Oscar was good. Not overrated. Who is putting him at the top of ATG lists? No one. Oscar never looked like Trinidad, utterly useless vs fighters with good skills. Trinidad is the overrated one.

I thought his dismantling of Ricardo Mayorga was impressive and the loss to Mayweather wasn't as straight forward as people make out.

One thing about Oscar. He was awesome at dragging himself over the line when he looked defeated.

The second Mosley fight genius was a bad verdict and many thought Oscar won. Quartey almost got stopped in the last round and that is what pulled it out for Oscar.

    Genaro Hernandez- stopped by Oscar.
Miguel Angel Gonzales- Outboxed easily by Oscar
Rafel Ruelas- Knocked out by Oscar
Oba Carr- knocked out by Oscar
John John Molina- lost to Oscar
Jessie James Leija- Crushed by Oscar
Julio Ceaser Chavez- beat up twice by Oscar
Javier Castillejo- beat easily by Oscar
    Fernando Vargas- stopped by Oscar

Hernandez,Leija, Castillejo, all actually ended up winning titles again latter and Molina had not lost in 4 years before Oscar.
Now I thought Oscar LOST to Pea but got ROBBED by Felix.
I did not like Oscar but he was a great boxer and I have not even included some of his good wins as well.
