Stylistically, this is a bad match up for Arguello. Before his losses to Pryor, Arguello's previous loss had been at the hands of the boxer Vilomar Fernandez at 135 lbs. Oscar De La Hoya could conceivably outbox Arguello as well. De La Hoya was powerful enough at 135 to hurt any fighter. His boxing skills could lead Arguello into a TKO or even KO. At 135 lbs, De La Hoya loved those super featherweights coming up to lightweight. Considering, of course, that Arguello was the one moving up in weight and not vice versa. Arguello was a master puncher and a finisher par excellence.
.....again, look at DLH's resume of fighters he fought against at 140 lbs and below? Only JC Chavez at 140 lbs was in Arguello's league, and that fight was over before it begun, as Chavez was bleeding buckets of blood due to Chavez walking into the fight with a pre-existing cut that was'nt allowed to heal properly.....it opened up with the first flicker of a jab that DLH threw! .....otherwise, none of DLH's victims at these lower weight are even in Arguello's league. ....and I'll add that DLH is not a pure boxer as to box circles around Arguello as Vilomar Fernandez did...... .....its the reason DLH lost by UD vs Felix Trinidad! If DLH were such a fine boxer, why did he not box Felix Sturm who jabbed him silly.....or Bernard Hopkins, who he took a dive against to avoid getting beatdown...... ....where were his fine boxing skills there???? Shane Mosely showed he could be outboxed by Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright....where was DLH's fine boxing skills vs Mosely? As far as boxing skills are concerned, DLH is way overrated! DLH has yet to beat a top fighter in his era, and he's had plenty of chances.... .......... he sure as hell was'nt going to beat one of the best ever in Alexis Arguello!
Couple of points to make here - 1. Trinidad-DLH was a joke decision. 2. DLH whipped Chavez' ass twice, cut or not. 3. The Sturm fight was not only an overweight DLH, but also one far from the lightweight division. 4. Hopkins is a natural 160-175lb fighter. We're talking about DLH whose prime weights were 135/140, here. Of course he's going to get whipped against one of the best middleweights of all time, who's naturally much bigger than he is. He even managed to keep it somewhat competitive, while he lasted. 5. DLH won Mosley II. 6. Vernon Forrest was a damn good, big welterweight. He put on the two fights of his life against Mosley, and he earned the decision. 7. Winky Wright is one of the best 154lbers of all time. Losing to an ATG, once via MD, doesn't mean you're easily outboxed. Wright, like Forrest, is also much bigger than Mosley. Last point - if you're going to make claims like "none of DLH's victims at the lower weights were even close to Arguello's skill", then you can't hold his losses to Trinidad and Mosley against him (which were at 147,147, and 154). Oscar was undefeated at 130, 135, and 140.
I'm not refuting any of your points, although I could in many of them..... .....the point of my post was to show that DLH is overrated as far as boxing skills is concerned..... .....the poster I was responding too is suggested that because Vilomar Fernandez danced circles around Arguello, so would DLH...... ......my point was that DLH is'nt that type of a boxer. I dont agree with your assesment of the Trinidad fight and neither did three official judges who were unanimous in their decision that DLH did not win! My points about Sturm and Hopkins....yes they were bigger, but do you overpower a bigger fighter or do you outbox them.....DLH did'nt come close to outboxing either of them...... .....lets face it, its never really been about DLH having the tools to outbox an opponent.....he's certainly a capable boxer, but not anyone special that would cause problems to many ATG's purely by boxing as the poster that I responded to suggested. .....so yes, the middleweight divisions is not DLH's prime weight class, but if he was such a fine pure boxer as someone had suggested, he would have brought that up with him to the middleweight division. Thoughout his career, DLH has relied on his size, speed, quickness and power, not so much boxing skills to gain a win over a solid opponent! .....thats why I say that DLH's boxing skill is overrated!
