12 rounds at welterweight for the green WBC belt. -Modern distance of 12 rounds. -24 hr weigh in. Oscar will weigh in the neighborhood of 155-157 lbs at fight time. Perhaps more. -Modern referee who will separate fighters quickly, decreasing infighting. -10 oz. gloves. Could Williams overcome the disadvatages?
I don't like this matchup, because it's not a welterweight fight is it? It's a welterweight versus a small middleweight. Make De La Hoya fight at 135lbs and he's as good as dead, possibly at 147 too.
Technically yes, it would be what is considered a welterweight title fight these days. In reality however, it is what you have pointed out...a welterweight against a small middleweight. I think it would be fair to say that Oscar's lightweight title defenses against Hernandez, Ruelas, Leija, etc. as well as welterweight defenses against Chavez and a few others were played out in this manner to Oscar's advantage. I don't know the exact weight differential Oscar entered the ring with in those circumstances, but it would prove to be a benefit. This occurance came back to bite Oscar in his fight with Hopkins however...Hopkins, himself was very large for the middleweight divison...Was consistantly able to get under the middleweight limit with the 24 hour weigh in. Anyway, there you go... Is Oscar as good as dead? Maybe if the mafia becomes involved...but that's another story. It is not out of the question for Williams to give a very good account with the above scenario. Given his record against the greats he fought. As stated though, he is at a disadvantage. Anybody want to have a shot at it? (Opps.... poor choice of words)
I'd take Ike, even with those circumstances, becuase Ike could do his own weight cutting and come in accordingly heavier than he did in his days. Unless of course you want Ike to weigh in on the day of the fight or Oscar gets to weigh in three days before the fight like he did for his fight at 130 Ike will stop him late imo or repeat the Trinidad routine, but doing so at a stage when the rounds were even, not in DLH's favour (as they were in the Tito fight).
