S.A. Welterweight Collapses in Ring Between Rounds of Nationally-Televised Fight (News 4 WOAI TV)

San Antonio boxer Oscar Diaz went through emergency surgery for severe bleeding on the brain early Thursday morning, after collapsing between rounds of a nationally-televised fight at Municipal Auditorium.

Late Wednesday night, Diaz was down for several minutes in the ring before he was taken out of the Auditorium and to University Hospital, a Level One Trauma Center.

Diaz, the hometown favorite, was facing Delvin Rodriguez in a fight airing live on ESPN2 when he collapsed. The fight was for the USBA Welterweight title.

After the tenth round, Diaz was in his corner being checked by the referee when he started wobbling. The referee stopped the fight and declared Rodriguez the winner.

After watching a swarm of medical personnel attend to Diaz, stunned announcers told the national TV audience the fighter was going to be taken to Santa Rosa Hospital. That hospital is also in downtown San Antonio and within two miles of Municipal Auditorium.

Instead, Diaz was rushed to University Hospital several miles farther away. It is one of San Antonio's three Level One trauma centers.

Early Thursday morning, News 4's Sports Director Don Harris was talking to family and friends who rushed to the hospital. He said there appeared to be about 150 people outside the hospital, awaiting word on Diaz' condition.

Around 12:30 a.m. Central Time, family members told News 4's Harris that doctors were waiting to see if Diaz would need surgery for some swelling and bleeding on the brain.

Shortly before 1 a.m. we learned he was being wheeled into emergency brain surgery. That surgery ended around 4 a.m.

Look for updates here at woaitv.com and tune into News 4 WOAI at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. for the latest on the story.

You know watching the fight last night, I was telling my wife that between these two guys as a manager or promoter its is a huge risk to put these two in together based on their styles and what might be at stake here.
I was telling my wife during the fight that this is good boxing, this is what the sport is about taking risk and that no matter what the out come of the fight, that neither fighter should be effected by the outcome in other words who ever wins deserves it but the loser also should not be dropped in any ratings nor should he look for another line of work.
Then we had the stoppage and suddenly Diaz just collapsed on his stool it did not look good, though the fight it self as it was going IMO was great for boxing and good boxing, the out come just ****ed me up, I couldnt watch it after he laid down on the canvas I just knew from that moment this was not good.
my prayers are with Oscar and his family but also with Delvin Rodriguez and his family I am sure Delvin to is having a hard time dealing with this right now as well.
I hope that both men come out of this strong....
    Diaz fought like a Warrior!!!
