San Antonio boxer Oscar Diaz collapsed between rounds of a nationally televised fight at Municipal Auditorium late Wednesday night.

At last report, he was being given oxygen and treated in the Emergency Room of University hospital.

Family members at the hospital told News 4 Sports Director Don Harris that doctors say Diaz has some swelling and bleeding on the brain and they are waiting to see if surgery will be necessary.

Late Wednesday night, Diaz was down for several minutes in the ring before being strapped to a backboard, then taken out of the Auditorium and to University Hospital, a Level One Trauma Center.

Diaz, the hometown favorite, was facing Delvin Rodriguez in a fight airing live on ESPN when he collapsed. The fight was for the USBA Welterweight title.

Just before Diaz collapsed, the referee was checking on him in Diaz' corner. As Diaz wobbled, the referee stopped the fight and declared Rodriguez the winner.

News 4's Sports Director Don Harris is on the story right now.

thank you for the update. Bleeding of the brain is not a good sign. I hope the ambulances rushed him to the hospital as quickly as possible. it seemed they took forever. I'm not doubting their professionalism.
