Lemieux can always make money in Canada. It's not really a sacrifice. It was probably more of a litmus test to see just how good GGG was/is.

Lemieux could have been an additional incentive for GGG to step aside and let Canelo fight Cotto ... Maybe Golovkin wasn't agreeing to just take money (which he never got from the Cotto crook).

The landscape is PERFECT for Oscar now.

    1. They have a prospective rivalry with Golovkin, who isn't getting any younger
    2. They can build that up over the next few years - Mayweather was ONLY a household name because of the rivalries against PPV stars.
    3. Canelo is going to sail to easy victories in the 155lb division to emphasise his dominance. More cash in the meantime.

Easy. Sacrificing Lemieux made GGG much more willing to step aside for the Cotto fight (before Miguel hoodwinked everyone and got himself stripped).

Had Cotto dropped the belt earlier on, we'd have never seen GGG-Lemieux. Oscar would've been thrilled to make a Lemieux - Alvarez fight in-house to get Canelo a belt along with the lineal and Ring titles. It would've done big North American numbers.

Make no mistake, part of the reason Oscar got so ****ed at Cotto for vacating was because it cost him serious money by having to sacrifice Lemieux so soon after winning the title. He'd have made much more money holding David back for Canelo and not needing to share anything with K2.

    Thank you very much! :good

They're fun to make. I think the next one I'm planning out should be enjoyable, and at the very least, will be fun to create.

Yeah, I think something happened. Oscar seemed very reluctant initially to throw David in with GGG. Maybe it was a bone to throw GGG for staying out of the way of Cotto - Canelo, maybe HBO were putting pressure on to find a sellable fight or maybe GBP just thought it was worth a roll of the dice - after all Davids 0 went long ago, but a win against GGG would have been big, and could have led to a GBP controlled unification. IMO it was likely a combination of all three factors.
