Oscar & "The Ring" magazine

Back in September, Nigel Collins was ousted as the editor of The Ring magazine, and most of the other writers were jettisoned too, and the publication was moved to Los Angeles, the home of its owner, Golden Boy promotions.

I just wondered what the general opinions are of the "new look" December 2011 issue of "The Ring", with Michael Rosenthal installed as the new editor and Doug Fischer as his sidekick. Is the magazine better? I know it's going to be under a lot of scrutiny because it could become a Golden Boy newsletter now that it's housed in the same location.

I reckon it's worse. Rosenthal (and I've read a lot of his stuff on The Ring's website) comes across as an average hack who'll write anything just as long as he gets to be a journalist. As for Fischer, he always appears to be an arrogant know-it-all who is not quite as perceptive and knowledgeable as he thinks he is.

But the most striking thing for me about the latest issue is the amount of errors. There are quite a few facts that are wrong (such as referring to Thomas Hearns as a Hall of Famer when he hasn't actually been inducted yet) and way too many grammatical and punctuation mistakes. Doesn't anybody proof read this thing before it gets printed? And why have all the nationalities of the fighters disappeared from the ratings?

In light of the recent headlines (and this may seem politically incorrect), it also seems strange to be reading a magazine that is owned by a (reformed?) drug addicted, alcoholic transvestite. It's hard now to think about any of Oscar's fights without being reminded of those gross pictures of him in frilly panties and fishnet stockings. And this brings forth another question: did he ever wear women's underwear in the ring? Was he secretly wearing a black lace thong under his trunks when he beat Fernando Vargas???

 

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't put on her high heels and panties and allow myself to be photographed, and definitely not more than once (remember there were pics of him take by a Siberian hooker a couple of years ago who got paid off, so what was Oscar thinking when he repeated the same dumb move? At least make sure there are no cameras).
