This gif actually proves the point of what the thread is supposed to be about. Though the gif shows the classic sequence that DLH's detractors focus obssessively on it shows nothing offensively of why Whitaker deserved the fight. You could ****en moonwalk in the ring you still aren't scoring. But what the gif does show is that Whitaker's reflexes were sharp as a nail.
Just didnt see it that way...he was getting hit with shots he never would have in fights previous. And still ate a fair few shots in this bout to.
I believe Pea outlanded Oscar...and Im certain he threw more shots. So Im not totally sure what people are going on about with Pea clowning through the fight and not doing enough work. His style is to frustrate with his upperbody movement, it may come across as showboating but its how he wins fights aswell. Not that its the best way to gauge a fight...Most of those would have been Sweet Pea jabs. Hoya defo landed the harder shots and more of the power variety overall.
:deal I agree with what Eliqueiros posted Rock:yep His reflexes looked sharp too me(check out vid) just clowned to much and didnt do enough.
I don't feel like arguing DLH's other debatable decisions for the zillionth time, but I'll say that I agree with the earlier statements that Whitaker stepped up his game (training camp?) for the DLH fight as opposed to earlier ones. He'd looked bad in recent fights, notably the first Rivera fight and Hurtado, but probably trained a lot harder for a tougher test and big fight against DLH. You can sort of say that it was that "last great performance by an aging fighter" than Cus D'Amato would talk about. Unfortunately, it was only on the defensive end, and Whitaker's offense was pretty anemic.
Ive seen that stat and hear where your coming from but thats why Punch stats can be misleading. But even if he did land more shots like you said Oscar landed the more meaningful, and he definitely won more round which is how you are suppose to score the fight, unless there were multiple knockdowns which can sway the scoring, but there was only one fluke kd and even if you wanted to score it 10-8 Oscar was winning that round so it was 10-9.
I am relatively new to boxing because im following it a bit since 04 and a lot since 07 and i am watching a lot of old fights nowaday and try to score them, i always assumed if a fighter was winning a round but gets knocked down it becomes a 10-8 for the other guy or 9-9 based on the judge's interpretation of the round? btw, i think dlh beat pea although it was very close.
Pernell was past his best and Oscar still couldn't land anything on him all night. It was a very close fight and if Pernell had mouted more of an offense, he would of won.
It's called a 10 point must system for a reason. Somebody has to get 10 points in every round, so you can't have 9-9 rounds. If a guy gets knocked down, he loses a point. It's normally 10-8 rounds score because they lose the extra point for losing the round. If they win the round and then get knocked down, it's 10-10. Same is if both fighter's get docked a point it's 10-10 as opposed to 9-9.
Not exactly true Tommy...Under most boxing commissions rules if a fighter loses a point for a foul or something the round is scored then the point is taken off. 9-9 rounds can happen.
Pee pee was only landing one jab at a time. oscar landed more power shots. Pee wasn't throwing combination's, just jabbin and acting like a fool. He relied more on his crumping and hip hop then he did actually fighting
