Could someone educate me please? I was watching the fight the other day & wondered why these 2 never fought again? The fight was close enough (albeit slightly boring) There was a story to be told as Oscar ran throughout the last 3 rounds thinking he'd done enough to get a decision. It did over 1 million buys. It was a pretty easy sell really. Was it just a case of both fighters going in different directions? Arum & King perhaps? Thanks
According to DLH's book, there was no rematch because they couldn't compensate together, over two pounds in weight.
From what I remember... The first problem was weight. Tito moved up and Oscar didn't want to move up to face him. After that it was money. Tito always felt he deserved the lions share because he won the first fight and Oscar felt he deserved the lions share because he was the bigger draw. I think the best offer from Trinidad (late in their careers) was a 50/50 split, which Oscar denied.
Weight to my understanding. I Would like to see it still but Trinidad said he woudln't go under 168 and Oscar wanted it at 160 to my understanding. Trinidad fat!
Tito didn't want the rematch as Oscar made him look clueless in the ring for most of the fight. Even he knows he lost that fight.
This was about 2000 - 2001 if I remember right. Apparently not I think both of them were cool with not fighting eachother at that point, DLH - Trinidad would of been lucrative all the way up to the end of their careers, so neither wanted to play that card until they had too IMO.
There was a rematch clause on the first contract which stipulated that the one thing that would change in the rematch would be the places, i.e. Don King would promote the fight, Tito would make what Oscar made on the first fight and the names would be switched also Tito's name on top as the champion and Oscar as challenger. However, Oscar did not see fit which is why he never showed up at NYC the next week to begin negociations for the rematch....
Tito did want to rematch Oscar, but he was sruggling to make welterweight. I'm fairly confident Trinidad would have finished what he started in the first fight, but props to Oscar, because he did deserve the decision in the first match. I get the feeling Oscar wasn't as confident that he could beat Trinidad in a rematch though.
The question is... who was getting the lions share of the split? or, was it an even split? I really don't know about numbers discussed, all I remember is Trinidad's side of the story which basically said Oscar refused to take less money than him or even split it evenly.

Oscar was the bigger draw. Oscar offered Tito the biggest Pay day of his career, and a two fight deal, with one of the fights being against Oscar at 154. Tito's camp countered by offering Oscar 10 million and at 160. Oscar laughed and said it the counter offer was ridiculous and that he would need to carry rocks in his pockets to weigh 160.
