That's true Ice but you said it yourself you don't even watch all the fights on HBO and I doubt you watch all the fights going on around the world that are streamed live on the net.

That's five fight cards in 2 days, yes I pay extra for Showtime/HBO/PPV/Internet but Boxing is my favorite sport and I'm lucky enough to follow it to the max. Back in the 80's I would have to go see the Delahoya vs Pacquiao at a closed circuit theater and hopefully get to read about those other fights a in Ring Magazine a few months later.

I would love to see Boxing a mainstream sport like it was in the old days but the truth is I don't really give a **** if Joe Smoe in the street knows who Kelly Pavlik is, if HBO,Showtime,ESPN,Versus, stopped having live fights then I would start to worry. I'm content with being able to watch boxing from all over the world from either my television or my computer screen.

It was cool talking to you by the way Scully, I like the fact you ineract with the fans and don't just watch boxing like most of us but live it.

All I am saying, though, is that you have to go through a lot to watch boxing now. Some people dont have internet. Some people, like me, have comps that dont show the fights very clearly at all. I mean, be honest LOL Wouldnt you rather tune in to ABC, CBS or NBC and watch the likes of Mayweather, Hopkins, Dawson, etc on FREE TV in your living room (even if you didn't have cable you would get them). Plus you had ESPN on Friday nights and USA Tuesday Night Fights EVERY week. Plus the HBO fights. Think about it, to watch Arguello-Mancini, Curry-Starling (both fights), Aaron Pryor-Dujuan Johnson, Leonard-Benitez, Holmes- Maervis Frazier (and Carl The truth Wiliams), Cooney-Norton, etc etc etc (plus fights with Hagler, O' Grady, MIKE TYSON, etc. all you had to do was turn on the TV Saturday at 4 or Sunday at 1.

 

You have to realize, though, that having average fans know who the guys are makes boxing BIGGER...I will give you an example, when I was an amateur I trained with Sugar Ray Leonar and he told me a bit about the first Hearns fight..he said he could have fought Tommy in 1980 and it would have been a big fight but he knew that he would fight him for bit money when "grandmother's on the street started asking me when he was going to fight Tommy Hearns." He said he knew when people like that, the common man, wondered about the fight then it was time to do it. And believe me, Tommy was known to regular people in this country because he was on LIVE NETWORK TV several times on his way up (as was the young Hector Macho Camacho). People didnt read about him, they watched him. The net' today has boxing websites etc....but you have to understand that the only people who wil ever see them are the people who already know them. Non boxing fans arent clicking on eastsideboxing to check out the daily boxing news so they will never have access to it. But they channel surf on Saturday and see the show and stop in to see what all the fuss is about.

The BIGGEST FIGHTS in the world have a huge vieweing audience of run of the mill, casual fans. If boxing relied on true hard core fans such as yourself to carry it, boxing would be in big trouble financially. If that wasnt true then many more fights would be on PPV. There is a good reason why only a select few areon PPV/TVKO, etc

 

Of course that would be nice Scully but it's been a very long time since the promoters burned the bridges with the networks to in turn make bigger money with HBO,Showtime.

I would love for Boxing to be back on network TV but the chances of that happening are pretty slim, I know the big pay networks like HBO and Showtime have alienated the fans from watching the sport. I know in Mexico and the UK they have brought Boxing back to the networks and the sports has been flourishing, hopefully the promoters get their heads out their asses and try to work out a deal.

BTW remember a few years back Main Events secured a deal with I think NBC and they did a few shows in the middle of the day, I thought that was great at the time but it just disappeared. Hopefully in the future we get something like that going again, I think HBO has priced everyone else out so it will be an uphill battle.

 

I always miss this show. I would like to call in next time and discuss some some boxing.

 

I agree with that boxing is cannibalizing it's fans without promoting it, but also you take a look at the UFC. They pretty much got big on the internet and have never been on Network TV, HBO is finally getting up to speed to the internet and I think in this next coming year they are going to cut down on the PPV and they will start promoting the sport more online.

 

Excuse my rant but why the F do we still have figure skating on ABC but no free boxing and Saturday morning Cartoons?

 

Oh, you mean like it was back in THE EIGHTIES??? So you would, in fact, LOVE if it was back on TV... like it was in the the 80's that I speak about and am stuck in???? LOL
