Haye broke his toe. Tyson got head butted by Holyfield. Any others that belong on the all-time, pound-for-pound best excuse list?
Actually HOlyfield was butting the hell out of Tyson... Not saying that won him the fight butit was somewhat of a factor, and one of the reason Tyson was so rattled. Roy Jones claiming all the weight loss led to him being kod... Maybe a small part,,, but its not like he was at 200 plus and went down to 175... Lot of LH walk around at the weight Jones fought Ruiz at.. Father time just caught up with Jones and his chin got exposed. Leonard fighting Durans fight being the reason he lost in Montreal... DUran made him fight his fight... Although i do think Leonard learned and gained experience off that bout.. But the loss is what made him better,,.. THere is nothing he could have done though before their bout to swing it his way. SPinks getting blown out cause he was scared... Even though he did look a little spooked beforehand...IT would have mattered,... AT HW Spinks didnt have the power to keep a prime Tyson honest, or the chin (at HW unlike HOly) to hang with MIke long.. If they fought 10x .. TYson wins by early ko every time... If Spinks brought up his power and chin then yes he would have had the style to give him fits or beat him... DOnt get me wrong i think Spinks had average power at HW, enough to Ko Cooney but that was from accumalation and Cooney beiing past it and a big target.... SPinks teed off on Holmes with his best shots, and IMO never hurt him ...
I've watched both fights many times and can't see where Holy ever butted Tyson. Tyson comes forward, throwing looping punches. Most of his opponents pull back and right into his power zone. Holy, instead, falls inside the punches with his chin tucked in -- and Tyson's forward momentum is at least as responsible for the head butts as anything Holy does. And for a guy like Tyson to complain about head butts when he has tried to break opponents' arms and actually bit part of Holy's ear off, well, stay out of the kitchen if you can't take the heat.
jones was at 200 lbs the day of the fight with 6% body fat vs ruiz. Then he went back to 175. All you had to do is watch the first tarver fight and see how it affected him. It's amazing he won.
Marlon Starling....When did he count....when did he count me out....when did he hit me....do I look knocked out...I wasn't knocked out, I wasn't knocked down!!! 4:00 interview is woth the watch.... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbMWtTP6A2g[/ame]
THeres quite a few fighters that put on 20 lbs (walking around weight) and stil look super fit... I recently saw Abner Mares at my gym,, and he looked ripped but said hes at 135,140lbs.. Margarito walks around at 175 ,but always makes the JM or WW limit... .. Even recently Jones came in at a career high 198 lbs (5lbs heavier than the Ruiz fight) and still looked ripped... ... Also Hearns when up to LH beat Andries,,, then dropped back down to MW and held the title there for a while..... .. Im not saying it didnt affect him somewhat.. But i think the excuse is overexaggerated.... I thought Tarver won that fight... Jones was on the decline but i think a prime Tarver had the style to give even a prime Jones fits... WHat was the excuse for the Johnson fight? He had already had 2 fights and enough time to a have no excuses.
Foreman has a legion of classic excuses, particular for the Ali fight. "The ropes were loose." "I was poisoned" Wlad and his team came up with this excuse after Brewster "I was going to knock out Ali but I saw my friend betraying me by rooting for Ali." The latter, which Thread Steeler repeatedly posts always cracks me up. Has to be the greatest excuse, bar none. Simple good ones that plenty of fighters have used is, "I didn't lose."
He did get butted, how else did Tyson get cut? He was doing perfectly fine until round 5 and start of round 6, he had Holyfeild right where he wanted him, and then all of a sudden hes cut and he isnt the same, and then the knockdown.
