im a new fan of mma,ive been watching alot of ufc and old pride dvds and reading up on the history of it but what are some of the bigger current organisations out there and who are there biggest stars?
UFC is the one big org left, strikeforce is a bit smaller than the ufc. wec is owned by zuffa which owns ufc i think, and theres a bunch of small orgs out there
ufc has lesnar, mir, st.pierre, bjpenn, matt hughes, anderson silva, hendo and the list goes on and on. strike force has brett rogers, alistaire overeem, and a ton of smaller weight guys, babalu sobral, cung le, josh thompson, gilbert melendez, gina carano, that cyborg chick, fabricio werdum
Strikeforce, WEC, DREAM, UFC. I'd say they were the biggest out there at the moment. Obviously with UFC being bigger than the others by some margin. Strikeforce have (apart from what dude above said) Nick Diaz, Jay Hieron, Robbie Lawler, Jake Shields, Gegard Mousasi, Frank Shamrock etc. WEC have Miguel Torres, Uriah Faber, Mike Brown. They're probably the biggest guys there although the WEC has lot of other very decent and exciting fighters. DREAM have guys like Shinya Aoki, Hayato Sakurai, Mitsuhiro Ishida, Jacare, Mayhem Miller, Joachim Hansen, JZ Cavalcante, Melvin Manhoef etc. Alot of the fighters will fight in other promotions (with the exception of the WEC and UFC), so you see guys like Mousasi fight in both DREAM and Strikeforce for example. It's definitely a good idea to watch orgs other than the UFC otherwise you would miss a whole load of excellent fighters and fights.:good
Shooto is more like boxing in that it is run by different promoters worldwide. Japan also has Cage Force, which used to be called GCM DOG. It is one of the best pipelines of talent because of the fact that they fight where MMA should be fought, in a cage. It is where UFC contender Yushin Okami made his bones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dttg9Ps7xj4
At the bottom of the page is a list of all MMA organizations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cage_Force This page clarifies all the rule changes between orgs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts_rules
You can fall through the ropes. Stopping the fight and restarting the action is lame. The corners add what seems like an artificial element to the fight.
Sengoku is another org never seen any of their fights but their are articles/play by plays about their fights on sherdog. Bodog was a russian mma organization I am not sure if they are around still though. King of the Cage is also a fair size. They have a website you can check out http://www.kingofthecage.com/schedule.html
Alot of fighters LIKE the ring because it is more like a free area and NOT being restricted. Its more real. Most of the best fights ever have been in a ring.
It's more real to stop the fight for ten seconds so you can place the fighters back into guard in the middle of the ring?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFm_uMTZZSU Legends falling out the ring? From Rickson to Fedor and CroCop. Think about that, the biggest HW fight in the world at that point almost ended because of a ****ing ring. You can grab a cage, but you cannot nearly get the leverage you can with a rope. You grab a cage with your fingers, you grab a rope with your palm, or even your arm. Little Japanese men slapping you. This is terrible in every way imaginable, there is nothing good about it. There is no reason to fight MMA in a ring, there is a better platform; if MMA had always been fought in cages nobody would ****ing think of suggesting putting it in a ring, its silly.
How on earth can you say a thousand tiny Japanese men slapping you is more real? How is "stop, don't move" more real? Breaking up the action is more real? Repositioning the fighters is more real? Sakuraba ducking through the ropes so he wouldn't be finished, then dragging his nearly lifeless body back, in the process pulling Smirnovas off him and stopping him from winning the fight is more real? Dozens of fighters ducking their heads between the ropes to avoid getting hit is more real?
