At weekend Solis once again perfectly illustrated the term- "Hard work without talent is a shame, talent without hard work is a tragedy".

He entered his rematch with Tony Thompson at a career high 272lbs- 14 and a half pounds over what he was for the first fight and allegedly only did 18 days of training for the fight.

Obviously he had the amateur pedigree being an Olympic Gold Medalist and triple Amateur World Champion, but his lack of dedication means his professional career has not lived up to it's potential.

Which other fighters have also not lived up to their potential for similar reasons? :think

Kev mitchell should of been a world title holder, loved his coke and beer too much though, now he's drinking in the last chance saloon.

Studies have shown that talent ("born with it") accounts for less than 10% of a performers/athletes results. It can make a big difference if work ethic identical among 2 athletes. But if one guy exercises and prepares at 80% (Thompson) and one at 25% (Solis) then the 10% Thompson is lacking don't matter much.

There's a book called "The Talent Code" which is covering this topic.

Eddie Hearn needs to try and get Kevin Mitchell a shot at Mikey Bey- he'd ruin Bey and not in a good way.

Yep, those guys didn't live up to their full potential. Although at least they will be remembered for achieving something, unlike Solis.

The biggest fight of Solis career, his leg gave up under the weight of his fat body in less than 3 minutes.

Maurice Harris was supposed to be extremely talented, but very lazy... He also had some drug problems from what I hear.. His weak chin certainly didn't do him any favors either, but still definitely a waste of talent.

Golota has great talent but what was a headcase.

Vitali rocked his world with a temple shot, his legs gave out after the punch landed.. He was HURT. Similar to Grant/McCline.

I don't think he looked that hurt as in on Q.ueer st. But being that out of shape it probably doesn't take much to start imploding in a physically demanding sport.

As David Haye said after the fight "a healthy 30 year old at this level shouldn't have their knee randomly coming out of place"

What that study forgets to mention is that the 10% you get from the talent is the difference between being the #1 and #1000 in many of the world's sports.
You need talent to be able to complete with the best, no matter how hard you train an untalented guy he'll end up being decent at much.

You can't just not train and expect things to work out because you're talented, but you can't be one of the best without talent.

Good point. If talent didn't come into it, Richard Hall would've beaten Roy Jones while both were juicing probably. However there is probably more than a 10% difference in natural talent levels.

Solis has no passion to boxing anymore. He wants to focus to good life, drinking beer and eating junk food. He need to just retire.

I guess it depends on the sport. In track and field 10% is one hell of a lot... it's the difference between gold at the Olympics and not even coming remotely close to qualifying. While at something like Javelin you actually might qualify (but probably end up last).

I think being awkward can give you an edge sometimes too. Look at Maidana he confused Broner with the way he turns his punches and Floyd also had a problem with this. In the rematch Floyd had a better grasp on his style and won more comfortably.
