When Pacquiao took on Oscar Dela Hoya, the majority of fans didn't want this fight. It was a totally mismatch, most of us thought that Pacquiao would retire after this fight. Which other fighter do you guys remember that took a fight so dangerous they were going too far...Oh yea I just remember Oscar vs Hopkin was one other one. Is there any other one?
In retrospect Tito should not have taken that fight with Hopkins. Everyone was just so hyped up about his devastating wins that most of us lost track of how good Hopkins was and how big of a jump the fight would have been for Tito.
Great pick but for some reason to me those fights weren't in the danger zone yet. I'm talking about fight that there's no way he is going to beat him LOL.
Hopkins against Pavlik. Most thought that pavlik was too big and young and strong and would much have rather seen pavlik vs Calzage
Not really. The one thing about BHop is that he is extremely smart about weight and weight classes. He made Pavlik come up 10 extra pounds where he had never fought and BHop who is always in great condition combined with his great skills made him look slow, sluggish and like he had no business in that ring with him. He is a fitness freak. Same when he fought Tarver, he knew that Tarver had to lose alot of weight and was going to be sluggish and he just dominated him again. If he still has some left and I think he does, he will do the same to Froch.
With Roach in the corner for DLH before and watching the Forbes fight, the De La Hoya fight was a very calculated risk. Roach was very honest behind the scenes admitting he REALLY knew Oscar couldn't pull the trigger and was shot. Make no mistake, PacMan walked through DLH making him maybe more shot, drained and injured he actually was, but Arum is very good at taking calculated risks, like when DLH took on Sturm before Hopkins. Well, that almost backfired. But the Hopkins fight was a real risk. Pavlik vs. Hopkins a calculated risk too after the Calzaghe defeat, but Team Pavlik admitted it wasn't the fight they really wanted, and it turned out to be a disaster. Since then, no risk was taken in the Pavlik camp. PacMan took the serious risk vs. Hatton, a guy on the top of a division Manny had never fought before, and that payed out very very well for him. Pac also took the risk fighting both Barrera and Morales moving up in weight. He's a real risk taker. I hope he won't fight Cotto though, there's too much size and weight difference, PacMan doesn't need that kind of physical danger. Juan Manuel Marquez is one tough risktaker too, he took on Barrera without an adjustlng fight at 130, took on Casamayor the same way, taking on Mayweather at catchweight welterweight, but we all know he's too brave for his own good, PBF is ain't no weight drained De La Hoya, and JMM is not exactly a fighter who moved up in weight all the time. Mosley took on De La Hoya jumping up 2 weights, fought Winky and Margarito when it wasn't necessary. Tito also fought Winky and Jones at 170 when he could've stay retired. He'd take on Hopkins again without a doubt. Calzaghe took on Hopkins without an adjustlng fight at 175, and was ready to do the same vs. Glen Johnson before the injury. Hopkins is brave too, they didn't give him too much chance vs. Tito, he took on Taylor when it was absolutely unnecessary, jumped 2 divisions to take on Tarver and fought Calzaghe and Pavlik yet again from the underdog position. He was to fight Adamek, but he wasn't brave enough to do it for less than $4M lol. Marquez took on Vazquez without an adjustiong fight, Corrales was a brave SOB too, especially when he chose Clottey in his WW debut. Paul Williams is a brave risktaker as well. And what about Winky? Vargas, Mosley, Taylor at MW, Hopkins at 170, Paul Williams after layoff. Gerry Penalosa and Vic Darchinyan are the ultimate risk taking warriors in the lower divisions. Penalosa fought De Leon, Gonzalez and JuanMa in the later part of his career, Vic, moving up in weight, went to The Philippines to get robbed vs. Z Gorres, KOd Kirilov, Mijares and Arce, and moving up again to challenge BW King Kong Agbeko, which can be too much bravery.
Duran-Barkley is the best example of this. Barkley had blitzed Hearns, Duran was all washed up. Most people feared for his safety. And yet again, Hands of Stone proved he is one of the elite fighters of history!
While it may be true that Pacquiao might be overhyped at the moment, Mayweather is no where near as underrated (if at all) when Hopkins fought Trinidad. Practically no one thought old man Hopkins could stop the devastating Trinidad at the time.
