Other than RJJ and Pacquiao, name ATGs that didn't utilize a strong jab?

Normally, I'd expect a discussion like this to start with the name Marciano. Even Frazier was able to jab with Bob Foster and Jerry Quarry (in their rematch) effectively. I can't think offhand of any footage where Rocky does this. Tommy Burns, if one accepts him as an ATG, could be another. Dempsey didn't like the concept of "jabbing" preferring to describe his straight left as a "jolt," and he's recorded as having dropped opponents with it during his climb up the ladder. He's reported as having used a jab effectively in the first match of his trilogy with Terry Kellar, but there's not much footage of him doing this at the championship level.

Cuevas might deserve a shout here. There's a nice shot of him knocking back Espada's head with a straight left, but again, it looks like a loaded bomb and end in itself, not a setup punch.

Having watched RJJ with Paz, I agree that Roy's jab was as good as anybody's when he chose to use it.

I'd need to review footage of Tiger before commenting on him. Ditto Basilio.

 

exactly, the only other fight he threw it with any intent was in the ruiz fight. speaking of technically inept...

 

Pea, it might be worth reviewing RJJ-Hopkins, if you haven't done that in a while. (I have not looked at it in many years myself, but recall that Roy basically won by out jabbing Bernard, having an injured right.)

 

what do you expect? poor guy threw jabs in maybe 2 fights before that...

 

I think these are the only 2 ATGs who did utilize a jab. A PED jab straight into a vein

Basilio did use a jab, though mainly only to keep people from jabbing down at him. He threw it quite well.

 

Surely your commen would make more sense if you said 'i know you're trying to be funny, if only you had some wit'

My comment is 50% fact RJJ did enhance , Pac being scared of needles will remain unproven.

 

Good to have that confirmed. (It wasn't his jab I was looking for when viewing his footage in the past. I think of his double hook landing Gavilan, or his flattening DeMarco in devastating fashion.)

Bizarre that Ray Leonard got mentioned in this thread, as Dundee compared his jab favorably to Pastrano's, and he did floor Benitez with it.

I know people deride Robinson's jab as 'not being proper' which dosetn make much sense IMO in the first place. But surely you realise it was effective?

Gushiken is a great shout, he hardly ever jabbed.

Basilio had what I called a 'rugged jab' he kinda used it to keep guys at range to set up his hooks.
