25 years would put me about 1985 I thought. thats when i started to follow boxing seriously so can only comment on that
boby dont get me wrong things i have heard from those i respect have rose and famo equal if not better i just haven;t sen enough to comment
In no particular order, my short list is, Tony Mundine Jeff Harding Lionel Rose Johny Famechon Kostya Tszyu Rocky Mattioli Special mentions to Cliff Samarden Lester Ellis Jeff Fenich Dave Sands Paul Ferrari
Rose Fenech Tszyu Famechon Harding T Mundine Thompson There are so many, If pressed i would say Fenech and Rose. I cant split them
how can anyone say rose?? He gave probably the best performance but he had a short reign and was only so so at the top level.. tszyu smashed top ten fighters virtually his whole career.
yeah, take a look through fighter magazine and tell me where Takao Sakurai, Choo Chou Castillo, Alan Rudkin, Jose Medal and Rubin Olivarez were ranked when Lionel faught them. I believe you'll find 4/5 were #1 contenders at Bantamweight. Lionel did not tackle lowly rated bananas as easy defences. Nor did Lionel fight in a 'safety era' where fighters jump into whatever division above or below to secure an easier fight. Tszyu was dodged. Lionel faught. Lionel wins.
I'd have Fenech slightly ahead of Rose... not much in it. People forget just how highly rated Jeff was. Most had him at #3 pound for pound at one stage. As I said, not much in him and Lionel, could go either way.
Totally agree mate.. From Jofre through to Zarate, they were the best years. Lionel was caught in the middle and kicked some serious goals.
Well Ippy, considering Lionel was the second highest paid fighter in the WORLD at the time, second to Muhammad Ali, I guess that made him #2... Oops.. looks like the scales have tipped back in Lionles favour... :tong
