Here's an article on our wild mate Butterbean Stiffy: How tent boxing has saved Joe Sweeney by Nick Walshaw - The Daily Telegraph - 10th Jan 2011 A LUMP of timber has been smashed across his melon. So too baseball bats, iron bars and one particular broken bottle that sliced from shaven head to halfway down his spine. This content is protected So how does a fella not only survive such bloody brawls, but maintain an undefeated record? "You charge 'em," Queensland cattleman Joe Sweeney laughs. "Charge 'em and throw 'em. Because if a bloke can fight, really fight, why would he go for a piece of wood?" All tattoos, gut and fists the size of RSL meat trays, Sweeney is the magic behind that banging drum. A fearless thrower who, at 130kg, not only heads Fred Brophy's iconic tent boxing troupe, but also gets tossed the biggest, baddest hombres your town can throw up when the showman delivers his "roll up, roll up" call. Miners, cowboys, bikers, bouncers; none has seen his arm raised against this unassuming Bundaberg boy who works cattle, drinks rum and has all four of his kids inked across the Nullarbor-like expanse he calls a chest. Yet for this man dubbed Butterbean, the imposing record is a disguise. The perfect ruse. Sweeney, see, fights not to kill his rivals, but to save himself. To ward off what he calls "the demons" of an oppressive childhood where he was smoking by nine and scarred by third degree petrol burns at 13. Where he saw his older brother first jailed for murder, and then murdered himself. "So for years I carried this anger," the boxer, now 37, concedes. "Thousands of pub brawls with bats, broken bottles, iron bars, the lot. "If I was at a party and Brophy's boys were in town, I'd leave there by myself to go fight in the tent. Even follow them around challenging for days. I guess Fred noticed the anger ... and saved me." It's easy to align the dying art of tent boxing with notions of thuggery and barbarism. It's also wrong. For it ignores the subtlety of Sweeney deliberately taking a hit to the stomach, or worse, to keep an opponent in their matches. Or slapping a bare-chested rival because the sound is far more ferocious than any impact. Sweeney has only ever iced one opponent. Seriously injured none. For what future does a tent boxer have if he continually destroys opponents who pay $25 for the privilege? "The day I became a tent boxer, it meant I was no longer a mug," Sweeney insists. "I'm a fighter but, more than that, I'm an entertainer too. "I'll never forget the day Fred finally gave me one of his hats with Brophy's Boxing Troupe stitched across the front. I wear the bloody thing everywhere. Because wearing that hat ... yeah, I reckon it means you're somebody."
hope he stays on the straight and narrow.we will never all agree on the merits of tent boxing but hey its changed 1 mans life for the better.
Roll up roll up.. This content is protected I just have one quick question.. if the theory of others here of supporting tents is correct then what happen to Blair Wilsons pro record? why was it he was able to win 1001 tent fights but barely able to win any pro fights if tent fighting is so great you would think he would have went on to become a super star in the pro ranks, Australian champion or World champion. Roll up Roll up.
