    utrage over Mundine's 'Muslim retreat'
    August 05, 2008 12:01am

BOXER Anthony Mundine's rumoured interest in turning a New South Wales Central Coast resort into a Muslim retreat has prompted neighbours to threaten legal action.

Locals yesterday vowed to fight possible plans to turn the Dooralong Valley Resort into a private hideaway for Muslims, as uncertainty about the development grew.
It is now understood prominent Sydney lawyer Adam Houda is one of a number of new co-owners of the resort, a partnership believed to also include Mundine.
Houda, along with Mundine and friend and Bulldogs star Hazem El Masri, visited the resort a number of times when it was run by former owner Ray Stehr Jr, son of league legend Ray Stehr.
Mr Houda would neither confirm nor deny claims he intended to close the resort to the public, but resort staff said the new owners planned to put the property to personal use.
The lack of information has locals fearing a Camden-style showdown, where residents protested loudly about an application to build a Muslim school in the sleepy southwestern Sydney town.
Dooralong Valley Residents' Association president Warwick Benjes said the local community had been outraged by the rumoured plans.
The Daily Telegraph made numerous calls to Mundine's management yesterday, but did not receive a reply.
Mr Benjes said residents were concerned the new owners were refusing to talk about their intentions for the property.
"We are concerned we don't know anything. If these guys want to do something we don't like, we will see them in court," he said.
"We're just not going to cop it."
Mr Benjes said no development application had been lodged with Wyong Council to change the resort, but has called for council staff to attend an August 12 meeting of Dooralong residents to discuss what is permissible for the site.
He has the backing of Wyong councillor Brenton Pavier, who said he had also heard rumours of a Muslim retreat.
"The community just wants to know what is going on," Mr Pavier said.

"...Locals yesterday vowed to FIGHT possible plans to turn the Dooralong Valley Resort into a 'private hideaway for Muslims', as UNCERTAINTY about the development grew...."

see the negative overtones the mainstream media loves to use in any topic involving muslims. instead of 'fight' they could have used the more correct term, 'contest'.

"private hideaway for muslims"...no, not private. others would be welcome. NO. they arent hiding away. uncertainty?? theres no 'uncertainty'. there is "rumoured interest".......

give me a break from this muslim bashing at every turn...

anyway, whats the problem???? theres plenty of christian resorts...

I know very little about the muslim religion but am very interested to learn the foundations of it. Each to their own in their own country but when in our country we need to understand the muslim way to make our mind up if we like it or not.

Sallywinder can you explain the foundations of the muslim religion?

I totally understand the Camden thing, it may have been a lot to do with xenophobia but basically they were going to turn a pretty laid back part of town into something the locals didnt want. With increased traffic congestion and population, and if I was them I wouldnt care if it was a muslim, christian or secular school I wouldnt want the character of my area changed either if I liked it the way it was already.

That's true Whatarock, if it's a change to the structure of the society around it, it definitely should be open to debate, just seems that the word "muslim" is more of a catalyst in that article than the resort changing itself.

This country does need to understand Muslimism (new word) a little more - in the UK Muslims live hand in hand with everyone else and even with the fear caused by the bombings etc people still don't seem to have such a knee jerk reaction to their culture simply cause they have a better understanding of it and accept it over there.

    Are you having a laugh?

Speak to some white English people. Maybe I am running into the wrong ones, but I have never met people who are so open about expressing their view that their country has been 'given away'. Sometimes they can explain themselves without resorting to racism and sometimes they can't. But to a T, the vast majority have major problems with this issue.

I live in an ex-pat culture and I've found the majority of English 'hate' the thought of ever living there again. The Aussies here don't have half the vehemence.

Would your views be informed by the TV/movies/magazines?? I don't ask to be narky, it's just that it's easy to misinterpret cultures when you are only viewing their media.

Back in the day, before gang banging and hustling became prominent representations of black culture from the states, think the arse end of the Cosby era. A Leb guy at school was getting worked up about Aborigines and how they don't improve themselves 'like the blacks in America'. He was thinking of Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan and all those black lawyers on TV, cause that's all he knew about black Americans. His strongest impression of Aborigines was from kids coming in to his dad's southern sydney deli and causing a ruckus.

Or to make a much more benign comparison, it's like poms who think that we all live in Ramsay St or Summer Bay...................
