Outside of Clay, Lewis and Holyfield, didnt most Heavweight ATGs rule over 'weak' divisions?

Sadly, only those with an underlying issue insist on calling him Clay.

It reveals a lot about what kind of person they are.

My biggest knock on Wlad is that he lost to lesser fighters, got Knocked Out even, and rarely pursued the rematch...
Instead taking it out on the fans by adopting a more safety first style each and every time he got starched.
The only rematch I can remember was against Lamon Brewster, and that was some time after their original fight, and Brewsters career had pretty much run its course. It was a name win only at that point and Brewster was not the same fighter who had KOd vlad years before.
Very similar to Cottos rematch win over Margarito in that sense

As critical as I am of Wlads career, I actually give him a pass on this one , and not because they were brothers, or herman's
Vitalis own reign was too spotty. He had that long break in the middle, and when he came he had that one great performance against, and a good win over a top rated guy in Areola (I was in attendance at Staples for that fight), but from then on had a string of uninspiring performances.
His fight with Briggs was impressive to some extent, but he failed to close the show when Broggs was there to be taken, and worst of all he actually put on a boring fight against Derrick Chisora of all people, despite chisora clearly being there to brawl with him.

    He rematched Peter as well.

Personally, I like to look at a fighter's prime run. Give him some benefit of a doubt to show he has improved.

And Wlad went 11 years undefeated against almost only ranked opposition, losing just a handful of rounds in the process, and did better in rematches against both Brewster and Peter. Had he beaten Vitaly as well he'd be just behind Louis and Ali for me.

Sure, Vitaly has a weak resume compared to his apparent ability, but he was still head and shoulders and more above anyone else except Wlad during that period. If you have such a competitor (and not many except Ali has had that) you have to show who's the man to really be considered the man.

Like AJ and Fury right now, for instance.
