i wont sit here and say the guy guy is no good, he is damn good and quite possibly the best 175 lber...but that is to be seen....

what im seeing is alot of ppl over hyping his power, yeah sure he has some, but it not the huge power thats putting away his opponents...its is volume of punching, his accuracy, and the fact he dont give up a moments breath once the bell rings...

ill break it down... kovalev while fighting, never looks away from his target, look at his face, he is always watchign here he wants to hit..and he uses both hands constantly, and liberally at that too. he has good foot work and knws his distance pretty well, he is a tall well built man, with a reach that is not super long, therefore he knows how to get his range but stay out of others... his power is good, i would say similar to froch..but the fact he has more weight to back it up and also hits with both hands, starts early and once he sees his opponent hurt he dont let up...this is hy he gets his ko...not his huge power...

i mean just take a look at cornelius white, he went a few rounds with kovalev before the ref stopped it, then look at white vs george..george straight up ktfo white in round 1...and this when white had his 0 still...to me this says that kovalev has power, but it is far from as great as most here say....this being said i think kovalev gives any top fighter a run for their money and is a threat to anyone...but i have yet to see him in there with a guy who can punch back with similar or greater power, and can last 12 rounds swinging with power(stevenson vs george) which i have not seen kovalev fight for 12 rounds yet.

the overhyping needs to stop, but i know it wont...but i guess i get a laugh about it, i get to see who knows what their talking about, and who jumps on the train

Why stop celebrating and hyping a fighter who came out victorious in a sport we all follow and enjoy?. What's wrong with hyping a new rising fighter?. I don't get these "Don't hype fighters" threads especially after they score an impressive win, are you a fan of the sport or what?

I think it's funny that Kovalev now gets called overhyped. The dude spent more than half of his career without a real trainer or promoter, sleeping in the ****ing gym. The guy earned his recent success the hard way similar to for example Martinez.. Overhyped my ass.

whenever there is a very good boxer to come along and knock his opponents out without taking much back in return, and the opponents are of good quality, the ratio of fans over-hyping the fighter to fans under-estimating the fighter is probably sixty five to thirty five.
anyway, i think that kovalev is a very good fighter; he has good legs, he throws punches well in combination and jabs well, knows how to counter with several punches and will probably be hard for anyone to beat, including hopkins (who i think would beat kovalev in the end.)
i don't think that he has stunning one punch knock-out power, i think he just throws his punches quickly enough and from awkward enough angles (like throwing hooks around opponents' guards to set them up for straight punches to the face or hooks to the body.)
he wears down opponents from an accumulative effect. it's interesting that his style hasn't really changed from the fight he had with roman simakov (RIP,) though he did cross himself after the first knockdown of cleverly.

i dont over hype anyone, what happens when you over hype a good fighter, then he looses in a ko or tko loss, then you all say he had a glass jaw or he was over hyped, i just take it as i see it, kovalev is a good fighter, but power is no higher than froch, but is a more complete fighter, i just want to see what his gas tank is like and how is he in the later rounds

ok and have you seen his level of opponents asside from his last 5 fights?

Simakov was his first real test, it was his 17th fight and he was a pro for something like 2,5 years. He gadually increased the standard of his opponents since then. He got his first real test earlier than most prospects and with less time in the pros, somehow logical with no backing from promoters or networks, it was sink or swim for him, but whatever..

We can see his skills, speed, and power. Kovalev isn't hyped. He's the best at light heavy, and odds on favorite to send Hopkins into retirement if Hopkins honors his mandatroy and fights Kovalev next.

The hyped fighters are one who are 22-0 20 Ko's without being champion and fighting anyone.

The unkown quesiton mark on Kovalev is how good is he the late rounds? My guess is fine. Due to his skills and power, he has not seen the 10th, 11th, and 12th.

Kovalev deserves nearly all the credit he's getting.

I haven't seen anything too out of control ala Bute, Khan, Golovkin hype so I would have to disagree with the opinion that Kovalev is overhyped.

100%, i was gonna say something similar. i hope we can just enjoy the spectacular performances this guy is giving us without having to say he would have beaten Ezzard Charles, Bob Foster and Michael Spinks.

No such thing as balance on ESB.
Your either a bum or an Olympian God.

You'll always get fans of a particular fighter who over hype their fighter some will really go over the top with it.
Most of the true boxing fans will keep it in perspective they know he's an obviously good fighter but just want to see how he reacts when someone puts him under real pressure. At the end of the day in twenty odd pro fights he's only fought about 60 rounds.
He is very exciting though and being a boxing fan I hope he's around for a long while yet.

Your saying it like people werent picking Cleverly to win
The Kovalev hype is legit the way he gets power in his shots without losing his balance and throws 2's and 3's

Theres always them few people that cant take a hype over a boxer, never understood why

His power is not huge Like Wilder or Stevenson, but his output, accuracy, defense, foot movement, and distance are very good. He is the whole package. If and when he fights someone who can bang hard we will see if his chin holds up. Only question I see left to ask about him.
