Unless this means the 4th round has no time limit, I do not see how this classifies as "sudden death."

In American Football, sudden death overtime is an additional quarter. The game will be over as soon as one team scores. The other team may not even get a chance to play offense. If neither team scores, the game is a draw. In the postseason, draws are not an options and new quarters will be added until someone scores.

Anyway, I don't see how this could be applied to mma. If someone wins by ko or submission, how is that any different than it would have been any other round? Unless they are saying the judges can't score the final round even, I don't see how this can be called "sudden death." I don't even know how they could guarantee that a round couldn't be even. What if a fighter gets a point deducted, but wins the round by what would have been a 1 point margin?

I think it should say Strikeforce will be adding an additional round in the case of a draw after 3, and drop all this "sudden death" crap.

Its sudden death because whoever wins the round, wins the fight. It makes sense.

Say a fighter wins the round 10-9, but a point was deducted. That would make the round 9-9. So much for that being a guarantee.

Sudden death is a scoring term. The first person scored on loses. The first to score wins. If time runs out, the sudden death never occurs.

It's not like they're stopping the fight as soon as someone lands a punch. That would be sudden death.

    It's an extra round.

Id like to see them score the fight as a whole and consider the 5 minute mark a breather tbh

A 4th judge was going to judge the fight overall on performance and decide a winner if there is a draw. I think that might have been better.

Yeah I read that somewhere when the tournament was announced. Let's just hope the guys go for the win if it gets to the 3rd as opposed to try not to lose it, we wont need this 4th round then

Very good. More time to submit Overeem with. There should be extra bonus points in the league for anyone choosing overtime victory.

Why, you'd get 3 points for the round?
