Overrated "Close" Fights

Ward- Augustus- it was a good fight, but ward clearly won, but some people claim it was very close

 

Are we talking about overrated as in:

1. They weren't as close as people say they were
2. They weren't as good of fights as people say they were
3. A combination of both

 

duran did win that night im sure of it it was a great showing from a great puncher who for one night only turned into a counterpunching genius.

hagler won the later rounds but duran won enough rounds to get the card.

and the gatti - ward trilogy:admin ...your right gatti was by far better with his shots and just took alot of fire

the first fight was amazing but the rest...i dunno ward said himself that he cant remember any bit of the III fight...nor can i

 

nah it was a close fight ward won on the knockdown.

augustus had ward in loads of awkward positions ward didnt know what to do...i still feel augustus got that by a very close but clear ud

I agree with all of those actually. Especially Hagler-Duran. I thought Hagler racked up a convincing score in the end. Although it was always a competitive fight. That's the word I prefer to use rather than "close". A fight can be consistently "competitive" but then one guy clearly wins a lopsided amount of rounds and it is not "close" by any means.

 

Jones - Tarver

Tarver gave Roy a harder fight than anyone else at that point, however Tarver still clearly lost. No way Tarver won 7 rounds or even 6. Clear Jones victory 117-111

 

The judges are drunk about 70% of the time they scored for Marvelous Marvin

Time will tell if De La Hoya-Mayweather is seen as a closer fight than it really was.

 

De La Hoya - Mosley II. If you want an example of how muting Lampchops and Friends makes the outcome of a fight obvious, this is Exhibit A. Crystal clear UD for Mosley.

I'll second Jones - Tarver I. This goes beyond the intent of the thread, identifying falsely glorified "close" bouts, but if it wasn't an official draw I'd throw Pacquiao - JMM into the fray. People were so blinded by the size of Marquez's balls, that they talked themselves into believing Manny didn't win. Which he did.

 

A lot of debate about this fight.

I just cant see it though, Pac won it in my eyes.

Rounds 2-12, Marquez probably won more rounds and won them more convincingly but Pac still outlanded and landed the harder shots in enough rounds to hold on to the early lead.
He may have looked one-dimensional but that one dimension still did enough to bag a few more rounds after the first.

The first round happened and turned a close either way decision into a clear cut win for pac.

Just my opinon though.
