IMO Tyson is the most overrated AND underrated in equal measures. It tends to swing one way or the other with him.
Foreman and Hagler to me are the epitome of this. Foreman is often hailed as one of the heavyewight greats and P4P best, and while he was great, his resume is not incredibly overwhelming. He only has like five or six really good wins. However, Foreman's great scientific abilities in the 70s are largely overlooked I think. The man was a genius. With Hagler I think it's a case of Hagler getting due credit for his 80s fights, although I think the fact that he is best known for his fight with Tommy Hearns is rather cruel, since that was a bit of a mindless brawl, and doesn't showcase what a great boxer and technician Hagler was. Hagler is very underrated when it comes to the 70s. He possessed blinding handspeed and beautiful footwork, yet most people you come across have no concept of Marvin Hagler before 1979.
There’s actually a decent amount of fighters in this category. Holmes Marciano Lewis Liston Tyson All the Fab Four Mayweather All these guys people either think are unbeatable or over rated
I think Gerry Cooney was once overrated. Now he seems to lose fantasy fights to anyone with even the slightest heartbeat
It astounds me that the forum has not only revived this thread, but extracted a coherent topic from it.
