Yeah, kind of like that,I'd say he was also more of an accurate puncher at times,he caught his opponents not with big one shotters but well crafted combinations and counters.
Granted Shavers was a bad finisher--but MAN he could pack a one punch wallop. (Look at his 7th round haymaker against Larry Holmes and his 2nd round sledgehammer against Ali--two of the hardest shots you'll ever see!! How both those guys managed to survive those skull rattling punches I'll never know!!)
He had tremendous power in his right hand. He was kind of slow so he didn't always follow up successfully see Holmes, Tillis, etc. He almost stopped prime Lyle. Who else stopped a prime Jimmy Young?
Rahman. He could definitely punch, but he was nowhere near to guys like Tua in terms of power. The only real big KO from Rahman in his 60 pro fights came against an ATG HW Lennox Lewis and it was one-punch knockout, so people overrate his punching power based on that exact fight. Outside of Lewis fight though Rahman never showed tremendous power. He stopped Corry Sanders and Kali Meehan, but needed tons of punches to do so, and they were still stopped on their feet. Hell, even glass-jawed Zuri Lawrence, who was laid out cold for like 10 minutes by Calvin Brock, eat enormous amount of punishment before getting stopped in round ten. Rahman couldn't KO shot, 40+ fighters like Berbick (KOed in 1 by Mercado and in 2 by Tyson in his prime), Ferguson (stopped by Carl Williams, demolished by Bowe in his prime), Al Cole (demolished by Sanders in seconds). He couldn't stop Monte Barrett, Obed Sullivan, Taurus Sykes each of whom were far from durable. And he couldn't even seriously hurt porcelain-chinned Oleg Maskaev in 24 rounds. I think people overrate him based singly by his KO over Lewis, but that KO just en example of perfect punch landed
Why even make this sort of post? He had a very high ko percentage before fighting Calzaghe and a low ko percentage after blowing out his shoulder.
I remember when Billy Costello was fighting the boxing mags frequently talked about his amazing punching power. Definitely a bit overrated in my opinion.
I don't see Holmes jab as underrated at all. In fact the more I watched his fights the more I came to realise how good it was.
Feeling mischievious so Ingo ! He needed multiple kd's of Patterson to get the job done, and threw the kitchen sink at Machen, before the criminallly inept referee stopped it. Frazier great left hook ,but really an attrition puncher who wore you down.
Hi Buddy. Well you're certainly a man of few words, would you care to expand, the reason being I feel that Hagler fits the criteria somewhat, whereby I can't remembers many times when he knocked an opponent cold, but came about his high percentage of stoppages by volume and combinations, but it sounds like you are not in agreement, and have a different view of which I would be interested to hear. stay safe buddy, chat soon.
