His testimony is worthless, and he was not hit flush by other ATG hitters to be able to compare. As far as I'm concerned, Shavers ain't even top 5. Suggesting otherwise is nostalgia. And did you read the article ?
Punching power is one of the hardest things to rate in boxing, as it tends to be so subjective. Just like styles make fights (just because fighter A beat fighter B, and fighter B beat fighter C, it doesn’t necessarily mean fighter A will beat fighter C), this seems to apply to power as well. You might have a guy known for having a lot of power have trouble knocking out a guy known for having a weak chin, whereas another guy not known for power easily knocks out a guy known for having a much better chin. You obviously have to analyze the totality of their careers, but even then, it’s just a really hard thing to rank and to try to say who is overrated and who is underrated when it comes to power. I love ranking things, but this is one subject I usually try to avoid (if I was ranking the things I least like to take rank, boxers’ punching power being underrated vs overrated would be # 3).
I read it--didn't agree with the methodology they used to draw their conclusions. And how could the testimony of Holmes be "worthless?" He actually took a Shavers punch! He has first hand experience. What have you done that can possibly compare to that?? For some reason you're trying to jam your opinion down my throat and show everyone what an expert you are!! Let's settle this amicably. You have your opinion on the matter, and that's perfectly OK. I have mine---and that's perfectly OK. Let's leave it at that.
1. You've obviously never heard of a guy named Mike Tyson. 2. You're putting more faith in a random internet guy trying to take down the tall poppy Shavers at all costs. How many ATG punchers did this rabbit get hit by? 3. Shavers has over half a dozen telling testimonies often from guys that have been hammered on by George foreman and perhaps even Sonny Liston. I'm guessing the testimony of every single one gets thrown out the door because....they pick Shavers!!!!!! 4. Why don't you give us a list of heavyweight boxers that have NON worthless testimonies. P.S. I'm not after a list of everyone that doesn't pick Earnie Shavers.
Interesting to wonder how we ourselves might treat the question of “Who was the hardest hitter we faced?” The question is a bit open. Would we be talking the single hardest punch taken, the guy who punched us the hardest on average etc.? Would we differentiate between accurate placement to more vulnerable target areas as opposed to an accurate perception of sheer force? If someone hit you just right on the chin and all you knew about it was opening your eyes up after being counted out - how would you interpret that? We’ve addressed this before but it seems being hit in the less vulnerable areas (arms, shoulders etc.) allows for a better perception that’s not corrupted by a complete or semi short circuiting of the brain - which still might’ve been brought about by a punch of incredible sheer force but one that you might not be able to accurately reflect upon. That’s why, at least for one, I can appreciate Cobb’s testimony to some extent, basically conveying (with obviously intended hyperbole) that Earnie could hit you in relatively less vulnerable area of your body but still hurt you badly. It should also be noted that in the Cobb fight, both men were clearly having issues gaining traction on the evidentially slippery canvas - arguably far more detrimental for a puncher like Shavers - yet old Earnie still landed some bombs which clearly hurt and stopped Cobb in his tracks.
You already know I consider Mike the best HW ever. And even though he was a tremendous puncher, in terms of absolute power in 1 punch, he's not in my top 5. But even so, my point was Holmes only has 1 other ATG puncher in Tyson to compare Shavers with. He was not hit by Foreman, Liston, Lewis, Wlad, Wilder etc. And although he got hit by Tyson, he was hit with a different type of punch. Tyson did not get to put everything he's got into that punch the way Shavers did. He doesn't need to get hit by any, the man have good arguments. Shavers was one of the very few to throw caution to the wind and hit with all he could must, others rarely did.
Did Holmes get hit by Foreman ? Lewis ? Liston ? Wlad ? Wilder ? Bruno ? The answer is no, so how could he possibly compare ?? I'm willing to bet my life that if we had a time machine and brought to the present day all ATG punchers, and put them to hit a machine that can measure their force, with everything they've got, Shavers would not even make the top 3.
You have your opinions--and you are entitled to them. I have my opinions-and I am entitled to them. We can go round and round on this topic until infinity--I will not change my opinion about Shavers. For one punch power he had as much as any fighter who put on a pair of gloves. And I would wager far more people would agree with this point than disagree. But even if they don't--I'm sticking to my position on Shavers--that's it!! I'm not responding to any further comments you make on this subject.
You know who really praises him though? Guys he fought. The guys he fought were horrified by his punching power. This is the most important aspect of judging power for me.
