Overrated wins Ali Vs Liston 1 Ali Vs Foreman Hamed Vs Barerra Holyfield Vs Tyson Calzaghes whole career
True of course, but this thread is only about individual wins. Why do you think Ali-Foreman is overrated?
I think that Paul Williams vs Antonio Margarito is a very underrated win. People forget that this was the absolute best version of Margarito, coming off recent wins over Cintron and Clottey, and had not lost at welterweight since 1996. Williams was unbeaten, but his best wins were over Mitchell and Matthysse (Not exactly Chuvalo and McCall in terms of punch resistance) and he had trouble dealing with both. Williams was going into a fight with an experienced, tough, iron chinned, and very avoided pro who was re establishing himself at Welterweight and looking very good doing it. For Williams to go out, fight completely fearlessly (or stupidly?), throwing insane numbers of punches to outwork his opponent over the 12 rounds is quite commendable, especially considering he came into the fight relatively inexperienced. It was a very good win over a very good fighter and doesn't get enough credit IMO. In my opinion, Tarver's win over Jones Jr (KO2) is quite overrated in terms of significance. At the time yes, it was an excellent knockout win over a man who looked virtually unbeatable, but looking at the circumstances regarding Jones at the time, the luster of the win dissapears to an extent. The truth is, most fighters around title level would have KO'd Roy that night, as Glen Johnson proved not too long later. Tarver IMO just caught Roy at the right time, when his punch resistance was affected by laege scale weight loss, and his reflexes and athletic ability had declined. Wiping out a P4P number 1 fighter in 2 rounds will always look good, but putting into context the circumstances at the time, the win is not so great at all.
Because ALL Ali did, was lie on the ropes, let Foreman tire himself out and then hit him and KO him. You hear stuff like, Ali was too good for Foreman, ALi removed foremans cloak of invincibility, Ali stood upto the bully, Ali outfought Foreman which is all bull****, Ali didnt do anything at all, he just let Foreman tire himself out. Rather than crediting Ali people should chuck tomatoes at Foreman for fighting the worlds stupidest fight. At least when Douglas caused the upset, he had a reach advanatge, height etc and Tyson was plain Lazy.
Dumbass!! That was a great win for Ortiz! His first title and it wasnt so much the oppenet, it was how he got knockdown twice and didnt give up like he did against Maidana. Margarito is a cheater and a punching bag, easy win. at a catch weight too
I hold him higher than Floyd(not at that time but overall). Took on better opposition(Cotto,Margarito) but as a Shane fan I admit that Margarito wasn't the same fighter post-Cotto but still dangerous against Shane. Shane had the right gameplan. Yes he wasn't the best of his era but people in ths forum(sorry this may be a bad way to examine that as most here are idiots lol) forget how good he was. DLH was always overall better than Floyd especially opposition-wise as he had more balls than Floyd ever would have. He beats and old Whitaker who had a belt and gave a better effort than DLH against Floyd. He moves up to face Hopkins despite losing plus Floyd would never move up to face Martinez while he still looks prime. De la Hoya was coming off a year of inactivity against Floyd too, Whitaker was coming off a famous ko over Hurtado 3 months ago. Now Floyd has the best fighter that's been in his division for about three years now but if DLH was in Floyd's position to face Pacquiao he would've fought him a long time ago:deal. Yeah it took DLH two years at WW to beat Trinidad but he established himself as a WW with about 10 defenses first while Floyd is inactive and will never face Pacquiao while he's still dangerous. DLH>>>>>Floyd. I could go on but I'll stop here. Sorry, long 2nd paragraph but still DLH>>>>Floyd. He's not on DLH's level and never was.
I disagree completely about Ali's performance, but I'll focus on just one thing instead of getting into a debate about that: You don't think it's impressive and worthy of credit that a past-prime Ali was able to withstand the best offensive artillery that a peak George Foreman could muster for 8 rounds?? Foreman was 40-0(thirty-eight by KO/TKO) at the time, and he'd utterly annihilated both Joe Frazier and Ken Norton in a matter of minutes. You don't think it was pretty special that old Ali had the mental strength, the chin and the smarts to withstand one of the most powerful and brutal heavyweight fighting machines of all-time? Really?
Overrated: Roberto Duran vs Sugar Ray Leonard 1 Ray was usually a defensive counterpuncher who employed the slick/pleasing-to-the-eye style of Andre Berto. Instead, he fought flat-footed and tried to bang with Duran, which wasn't like him at all - Ray never tried to knock people out. He accidentally walked into a left hook in the 2nd and from that point on, Duran's Katsidis-lite style attack was too much for Ray, who never really recovered from that Duran hook. The record was set straight in the rematch after Leonard consciously decided he needed to fight more like the slippery Devon Alexander. The result in this one though...an aberration. Think Williams-Quintana 1. Underrated: Jeff Lacy-Scott Pemberton I really thought Pemberton was a fine fighter. People forget just how highly Scott was rated at the time. Most thought he had the skills, durability, defense, and brilliance to put on a Kalambay-McCallum type clinic on Lacy. Lacy had other plans, displaying fearsome punching power that would make Bob Fitzsimmons bow down to him. I consider this win one of the best since the 168 pound division's inception. ...Popkins - I know your heart rate went up a little when you first saw the Duran-Leonard 1 shout Had to do it
do robberies also count as underrated wins? e.g. oscar beating tito should be his best win yet now we are stuck with the he lost all his biggest fights argument hence making it a underrated win for oscar? Also I dont think hopkins beating pascal is overrated, I thought pascal was going to beat him up based on how bad he looked vs jones yet he gets dropped 2 times then goes on to school pascal for 8 rounds making one of the most impressive combacks in recent years and getting robbed, yet nobody mentions that great comeback and win at age 45, yet 5 months later he again travels to canada and schools pascal again this time getting the decision, 2 boxing lessons in that period becoming the oldest champ because of it deserves its high rating in my opinion.
Yes he was smart and he had a great chin, but really all he did was lie on the ropes and let Foreman tire himself out. If ALi had stood there and outfought Foreman or outpointed him i would give him more credit
I agree with a lot of what you're saying here, I do believe that ODLH and Shane both had far greater warrior mentalities when it comes to seeking out the toughest challenges possible, when compared to the cherrypicking career-strategist Mayweather. However, I still rank Floyd above both as it's pretty difficult to dispute his greatness as a fighter, he did have fantastic ability at 130, and he has managed some good wins among all the handpicked dross on his record (Corrales, old ODLH, old Shane, Hernandez).
I do think Ali systematically out-thought and out-fought him. He catches Foreman with good counters in every round. But if you have seen the fight and you don't agree with that, I don't suppose there's much point in debating the issue.
:thumbsupGood point. Maybe THE best comeback of the year especially given the circumstances. This is why I like you and Popkins, y'all have LOGIC.
