Exactly what I thought. I'm not a big Barrett fan but I do hope he does his famous rope jump when he comes into the ring.
Definitely. I guess my hope that other heavyweights would learn from Eddie Chambers example of losing weight and fighting better was all in vain.
Yeah, it's hard to work up any enthusiasm for a guy who obviously cares less about his career than the fans do. 271 POUNDS! The dude's not even a tall heavyweight, which makes his weight all the more unexcusable. I was going to suggest that he do some more running to get in shape, but it's probably more appropriate to suggest he start off by walking.
I am really frustrated about Solis' weight problem. But, is this 271lbs official or just rumors? We Cubans have really have a bad luck streack in our Heavyweights. First, our two fighting heavyweight legends Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon never even bothered to turn pro, and they would have been Hall of Fame material for sure. Then, Jorge Luis Gonzalez defects in the early 1990's with high credentials in Cuba but was the most undisciplined HV of them all. Later more defectors join the club in Ramon Garbey, Eliecer Castillo who did'nt make any noise in the pros mainly due to the fact that Castillo was nothing special in Cuba and Garbey who was World Amateur Champion was also very undisciplined and did'nt take boxing seriously. After that, Cuban Cruiserweight Champion Juan C Gomez took forever to fight for a HV Title and finally did it super late at age 36, that at that age for him he was fighting at 60% of his full potential. Now the most talented of all Cuban HV's turns pro in Odlanier Solis who is 3 times World Amateur Champion and Olympic Gold medalist and he has a horrible weight problem. Believe me, it's not that he can't lose the weight as losing the weight is all a matter of serious dedication and effort, something that anyone can do! He is taking the HV division just like Jorge Luis Gonzalez, who thought that the pros were a joke! Hear these words people, Solis has skills to throw away, is a very good puncher, has an awesome chin and unmatched amateur accomplishments like no other HV out there and this is guarantee. What other HV pro is 3 times World Amateur Champion and Olympic Medalist? For goodness sake, Solis even managed to defeat ( Twice ) the legendary Cuban HV, Felix Savon who destroyed every single name thrown at him in his prime days! Solis can easily become World Champion and can easily defeat the K brothers, yes I said that! But he needs to take pro boxing seriously! He has an attitute problem in that he is Olympic Champion and all that but that was then not now! Teddy Atlas is right about this, " Cuban HV defectors tend to take it easy when they get here and tend to think that they are already Champions and don't take it seriously ". What a damm shame! What a waste of talent! He is Cuba's only hope for a World Champion and he is throwing it out the wondow. His old Cuban trainer is not doing his job if permits Solis to come in at 271lbs, no excuse. Solis will beat Barrett but I am very dissapointed in him, and I really don't know how far he will go because of his weight issues...:bart
Barrett didn't even know he had the fight until this week! I guess he was planning to pick up a fight at some point. All the best to him - he could earn himself another decent fight here. Suprised Solis' people didn't put him in with an absolute can given this weight.
I think he had one scheduled for not too long ago, so he clearly isn't the type to fall right out of shape.
Barrett has a record of upsetting prospects. Hope the young man is prepared - but coming in at that weight might be a problem. We'll see.
In important events promoters have a replacement opponent fit and ready most of the time, and unfortunately for Solis, it is Monte Barrett. Unfortunately, because Barrett weighed in at 218.5, lower than vs. David Haye or even vs. Tye Fields, so Monte means business! So here's the bad news for Solis supporters: when Barrett lost to Wlad, Rahman, Valuev, Couser and Haye, he weighed in at the 220s, but when he was at 210s, he avanged Couser in 2, knocked out unbeaten Beck, decisioned unbeaten Guinn and lost debateble decisions to Whitaker and undefeated KO artist Mesi, knocking him down the first time ever.
^ lol. nice pic. Hey, Arreola is 6'4" and 250 lbs he's called overweight, what do you call Solis then who is just 6'1" and 270 lbs? Butterbean? I know really .. Arreola is called that at 250 and Solis comes in 20 lbs more just don't get why these HW's don't take their careers more seriously. especially with the Eastern European domination and need for more top HW's you'd think both men (Arreola + Solis) would weigh more in the 235-240 range and give themselves a better shot at winning cuz I don't care what Arreola said about his own weight. .. he'd be much quicker and give himself a better chance if he weighed 10-15 lbs less. Even Wladamir has spent his last 5-6 fights in the mid 240 range, and hasn't passed 250.
It boggles the mind dosn't it? He's barely 6 foot 1 for fk sakes! wtf does it take to motivate these guys to train?
