What a fantastic character. Truly one of British boxing's most genuine guys. Never had a promoter's backing paving the way for him with nice bowl-over jobs like Bellew, Maccarinelli and Cleverly have, always in the away corner, and regularly called up with very short notice. 35 years old now, fighting in a division probably too big for him, but finally getting the run he deserves through determination and the fact he's one of British boxing's biggest pound for pound punchers. Would love to see hi get the huge pay-day against somebody like Huck his service deserves. Ovil McKenzie, I love ya!
He is one of those characters you can't help but like, I hope he wins the Lonsdale belt outright. Deserves all the credit he is getting and hopefully keeps winning and gets a huge payday.
If ovil was born over here and was from somewere like manchester/liverpool and had good local support he would of been much better looked after and prob would have fought for a world title by now. S hit how this game works sometimes.
There was a segment on Bunce's Boxnation programme that showed Ovil giving Jamaican cookery lessons at the Pea**** Gym - he came across as a nice fella, and a decent chef too. I like seeing stuff about gyms that do community work (the Ingles are another good example). The Pea**** scheme looked to be taking pretty rough kids (school expulsion cases), giving them the physical benefits of boxing training, plus discipline and self-worth, and also teaching them how to feed themselves. I bet a few hours of Ovil does more good than 5 years of home economics lessons if my own school is any guide. .... that said... I did have Askins winning by a point.
Poor man's Dull Boy Plodding Journeyman Chisora. Last night was a stinker and so was his last performance against Enzo.
You're illiterate, boring, obsessive and negative, ill-informed and thick. Go and troll another Boxnation thread. I don't mind a wind-up merchant who has some wit or intelligence, you are completely void in both. You bore the day lights out of me. Onto the iggy list you go.
You are the most boring cnut on here so go and take your face for a shyte troll. :happy An absolute turd muncher. atsch
I second this. I train at the same gym as Ovill and he will happily sit down in the cafeteria, talk boxing, take photographs and do interviews. I wrote about the numerous setbacks he's endured for another site (don't think I can link) but it basically involved not making Olympic squad for Jamaica as they had no funding (imagine that being the case for Usain Bolt), taking fights on just a few days notice (hence his loss column) and not being allowed to enter the US to make a career because of world politics at the time (hence why he's now here). Also, I second what the guys above said about the Pea**** community scheme. It's great. They take in 'hard to reach' kids who have been expelled from 'traditional schooling' and teach them the core subjects while also integrating skills like mechanics, hair styling (there's a working Pea**** Gym salon) and also big focus on sports - not just boxing.
