This is one of the better old time fights that I've seen. The footage is of pretty good quality which allows us to see that some of these older guys had some good skills. I'm super impressed with Moran in this (he's the shorter fella). His use of the ring, ability to slip and duck punches and the manner in which he breaks Nelson down, then finishes him is great in its execution. Actually the fight reminds me of Mosley-Margarito.The little, faster guy keeps beating to the punch, landing flush right hand leads on the always advancing, taller, tough guy until eventually the dam wall collapses and the tough guy crumbles. Anyway I hope you enjoy this fascinating piece of boxing history from a century ago :good [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeeUxuaRlEw[/ame]
Moran is absolutley masterful. I actually wonder if he doesn't represent a shift in technique in boxng. Nelson didn't win a round and had supposedly never heard the count of ten before (although that doesn't jive with his Boxrec record which has another loss by KO).
His footwork is fantastic. Note how whilst conceding ground to the advancing Nelson he's always in perfect range to attack and land solid shots yet also at a safe enough distance to merely take a half step back and make Nelson come up short with his own punches. Ring generalship at its finest.
Yes, that's what I mean by economy. He knows he could be in for a long long fight and he just doesn't take more steps than he needs to. Would have liked to have seen a primed version of Nelson in there with Moran, but I can't see him beating the Englishman.
