P 4 P Who Is The Greatest Pure Puncher Ever?

For everyone picking Foster, remember he was 175. The Dempsey that fought Willard was really 180 ... who hit harder pound for pound ?

 

i don't know...jack sharkey said dempsey's aggression was his biggest asset. he was an amazing puncher but i wonder if he wasn't his determination and pressure as much as his power

Easily its the Ghost with a hammer in his hand, Mr Jimmy Wilde.

 

Bob Foster and Julian Jackson don't belong in this P4P power discussion, because they didn't carry their power up in weight. Who did Foster KO at heavyweight? Which light heavyweights, let alone heavyweights, did Jackson knock down or KO? Fitzsimmons was initially a middleweight and knocked out heavyweights, ditto Ketchel. Hearns started at welterweight and KOd cruiserweights. Barbados Joe Walcott was a welterweight and has some KOs over heavyweights.

IMO the hardest P4P hitters are:

Fitzsimmons
Ketchel
Walcott
Hearns
Marciano

This is shown by both their ability to consistently KO bigger, heavier men, and also in their high KO percentages during their primes.

 

Who hit harder - Foster or Marciano? Marciano only weighed 8lbs more than Foster, think about that.

 

The list wasn't the most powerful p4p punchers. It was the best punchers. I.e. taking into account things like accuracy, punch output, combination punching ability and so on, as well as power.

 

Power should always be judged by what the fighter does in his natural weigt class. Foster was never going to have much success against HW's since he couldn't take their shots

 

I think this is the general scheme of the thread. We are all taking a fighters powers at his finest weight class and comparing it to others via the same criteria. It's not neccessarily about what Billy Bloggs did 4 divisions up vs Joe Blow who didn't ko **** 2 up. Granted if fighters like Hearns and Arguello are still axing people 3 divisions above their best it can sure prove their punching mettle but i'm sure not holding the opposite against anyone.

Foster is definitely a top shelf shout. He was horrific.

I've always wondered if Foster was such a monster hitter at 175 how come he couldn't really hurt heavyweights ?

 

The biggest thing bothering me on the thread is the overall poor rating of Joe Frazier ...if it's best left hook he's number 1 ... even with power he is under rated here .. he still had the power to smash Ali in the 15th round of a terrific fight ... his crushing of Mathis, Foster and Ellis and high light reel classics ... he threw it to the head and body with terific force and kept it up for 15 rounds ... that's pretty terrific to me !
