This fight SUCKS!!!! Vincent posted a similar thread yesterday. I googled it and had to go back 4 pages to find any relevant info, so I called BS on it. However, this morning it looks like this fight will happen after all. According to Arum, Winky priced himself out AGAIN. No surprise there! Mora would have to pay Forrset "step-aside" money, so Pavlik/Mora was a financial bust. HBO actually LIKES Pavlik/Williams, so the same people who liked Pavlik/Lockett are bringing us Pavlik/Williams. The bottom line here is that there are only three guys at 160 who are important; Pavlik, Abraham, and Wright. Abraham is not available until early next year, and Winky Wright is an *******. I think Pavlik has to stay busy in order to keep making 160. It's also true that although Kelly is popular among hardcore fans, he is still a long ways from being a household name, so he also has to stay busy to keep his name out there. We've got this kid here who would probably fight King Kong if Top Rank asked him to, but 160 is so thin he has to take fights like this to stay busy. That sucks!
This one may not be so obvious. Pavlik has beaten fighters who go toe to toe with him. If Williams does this, he is a goner. However, I think Williams took this fight because of the 2nd Taylor fight. Taylor boxed more and was successful against KP except that Taylor does not have the head movement that Williams does. Hence, I think Williams has a boxers chance unless he gets worn down by KP's persistence.
Maybe because Quintana showed he had enough power to hurt PW and I dont know but i think Pavlik might punch a little harder than Quintana.... ITs the usual bob Arum thing. He wants to get big names under Pavliks belt with as little risk as possible.
Paul Williams has never been a concussive puncher, what the hell does he think he can do against a guy who is bigger, stronger, harder hitting and a better boxer? The fight will be interesting while it lasts, if only to see what Paul Williams actually does. And realistically if Williams fights at Middle against Kelly, will he ever be able to make 147 again?
Okay here goes the Pavlik Sweepstakes challenge! Mora - can't get out of rematch Wright - Wants too much money Abraham - Stuck with a mandatory Sturm - Will not fight Pavlik. Now excluding those 4 names the challenge is ..... Find a middleweight opponent for Pavlik who will put up a decent fight and at least has some name recognition in the United States.
I hope Paul doesnt take a knee or gives up....I want him to get KO'd for fighting someone his own size.
Your exactly right with this post. With Winky's over-inflated ideas about his worth there isn't much to choose from.
Im shocked at how many people are just writing Williams off. I am worried at how well he will take a punch from a HUGE hitting MW...but he has shown very good punch resistance up to this point. He also has a 7" reach advantage...phenominal stamina and output and with his height and length he should be able to handle 160 with zero problem. Plus, Williams has looked great against everyone who he has faced...except for his one loss to Quintana. But Quintana was able to beat him using movement, defense and timing....three things that are considered (even by his most staunch supporters) as Kelly's biggest weaknesses. Other than power and being more comfortable with the weight, Pavlik doesnt really hold any significant advantages over Williams. That all said, I expect Kelly to stop him late...but he may be down on the cards at the time.
I'm not so sure that Sturm is stuck with a mandatory. He's currently contesting the WBA decision on the basis that Randy Griffin was his mandatory. In any event despite whatever he may say in the odd interview, Sturm has never really shown any interest in unifying the belts. ( Abraham has been trying to get Sturm to fight him for years and failed ) I haven't seen any real evidence of that changing.
That's wrong - Griffin never was the mandatory, just the no.1 rated boxer in the WBA. Sturm's mandatory is Sebastian Sylvester, who beat Javier Castillejo (the old man who knocked out Sturm 2 years ago) by vicious KO. Sturm must defend vs. Sylvester till mid-November 2008...
I agree with the weaknesses except for timing. It's timing that makes up for Pavlik's lack of hand speed. I have a question about Williams. I saw Paul when he was a prosepect, and thought he had real potential. I did not see him again unitl he lost to Quinatana, and I thought he was bloody awful. Clearly, he avenged that loss in sensational fashion. Now, here's the question. Is Paul's hand speed fast enough to make use of his reach advantage? Before you answer that, remember two things, Pav's defensive deficiencies are sometimes there because he'd rather take a couple shots than break his forward rythym. When Pavlik wants to he often swats punches away like a ****ing ninja! My point here is that the reach advantage is meaninless unless Paul has the hand speed to make use of it. My initail impression is that he does not, but I haven't seen that much of him.
Griffin was the mandatory in his first fight with Sturm. And he was the #1 ranked contender in the WBA for their rematch. And I heard Sturm did appeal to the WBA that the Griffin re-match should be considered a mandatory defense. Whether the WBA agrees with Sturm's argument is another matter. I haven't heard one way or the other. If they do then its likely that Sturm will face an interim fighter and face Slyvester in Spring 2009.
