Even if he did, he is still playing to Pavliks favor. Pavlik has fought at the 155-160ish range majority of his pro career with his better performances at 160. In addition to this, Pavlik behaves more like a pro and in a ring than Williams. He knows how to use his advantages better than Williams. Here is the big factor; power. Put the numbers together and you have Pavlik with 30ko's many of them against better opposition than Williams. And when I stated Williams was too technically flawed for Pavlik, I'm actually referring to his defense. Pavlik having the power advantage, while Paul Williams having a questionable defense to me speaks ko for Pavlik in this match-up. Pavlik has proven he can crack a guys chin who has shown to take a good punch when you let him land enough punches. I don't believe Williams' defense at this point of his career would be good enough to avoid those damaging punches. verdict - Pavlik by 7th round ko.

I wouldnt discount Williams entirely though. I believe Williams would still have a shot here; that would be to catch Pavlik cold and early. Pavlik has been susceptible to being stunned, early while not being warmed up. It also depends how much power Williams would carry up with him at middleweight. I strongly believe Wiliams would be more powerful at middleweight than he now. He has a long reach and it seems his punch power comes when he sets his range right and sits on his punches; like how he demonstrated against Quintana. If he could catch Kelly early with a long snapping left early on, that could be his ticket to victory. However, the question is, how many of these shots would he be able to land on Kelly without exposing himself to the same type of punishment or worse? Kelly likes to keep his hands up and only really gets caught on counters.

Actually, after writing all of this, I believe this would be an entertaining fight and i would certainly watch. I still feel Williams should take 1-2 tune-ups at the official higher weight.

Arthur Abraham and Felix Sturm are facing mandatories.

Sebastian Slyvester ( not that anyone in the states knows who he is ) has his sights firmly set on being Sturm's mandatory.

Winky Wright wants too much money.

Sergia Mora can't get out of his rematch. ( not that he'd be competitive anyway )

We say we want Pavlik to clean out the middleweight division. Name me another middleweight fighter with name recognition in the United States that could put up a decent fight.

Sebastian Zbik? John Duddy? Marco Rubio? Giovanni Lorenzo? Randy Griffin? Sebastian Demers? Brian Vera? Andy Lee? Anthony Mundine? Joe Greene? Javiar Castillejo? Amin Asikainen? Raul Marquez(booked, not that it matters)? Allan Green? Raymond Joval? Khoren Gevor?

Do any of these guys fit the bill?

I havnt read any of the above post but This fight somewhat reminds me of Mosley vs ODLH. Mosley skipped a division to face Oscar. I think Paul williams weakens himself to make 147 and 160 will suit him fine. Pavlik has nothing to gain except a paycheck. Paul has nothing to lose period.

So the only guy they could get to fight Pavlik is a wleter weight ???

:bart Sad !! Very Sad ane people have the nerve to bash Joe Calzaghe for fighting Jones ..At leats Jones is a Lt Heavy not a dam welter weight !

I really hope this is some cruel joke !!It does nothing for Pavlik ,Nothing !

At least Paul is in his prime unlike Jones who beat a past his prime fighter in a smaller Tito. The only thing this does for pavlik is get him payed. In all actuality how many of you feel Paul would be around the WW division much longer? at the end of Pauls career his is going to end up at MW or SM.

He's a prime welter weight !! Yeah great rebuttle !

Tito fought at middle and then fought at above the supre middle weight limit ..Paul has only fought at 147 !Tell me how is that even similar ?

And did you just mention a pay check ?? Wow the hypcorsy of the Pavlik fans ..This is really funny Joe was just ripped for going after the money with the Jones fight but its ok of Kelly to collect a pay check against a much smaller man !And don't talk about a what if when Williams is a current belt holder at welter unless he states publically that he is moving up ..

Moving up from welter will make him past his prime?:huh He has said he's had trouble making the weight. Has it ever occured to you that Mosley vs ODLH was on the same boat as Paul?

Well Tito fought at 140 and ended up fighting above SM give Paul a chance its not like he started fighting at jr. lightweight. Plus TIto's prime was at 154.

Hey A.H. i never said anything about acheiving nothing more but a check. I am a Pav fan but never did I rip CAlzaghe. At least Paul is or comming in to his prime. Cant say the same for ol man Jones.

Its very possible ... Williams is at about 6'1 1/2 with an 80+ wing span ... he also has a high workrate, decent speed, and endurance.

I don't see why this fight couldn't go down and I can see Williams having a legit chance to win this fight.

Like I said before ... he has the chance to join that elite group of fighters that have won welterweight titles and have gone on to win MW titles ... all those guys are hall of famers.
