C'mon, this a great fight, very nice to watch. Just happens that Williams should not have much of a chance, though anything can happen, we are talking a couple of elite fighters here. Maybe Paul already gave up on the idea of pushing himself too hard to make 147lbs. I think he should move up, other welterweights do avoid him and only if Margarito wins he will have a chance for a big fight at 147. Also, no way Paul is shorter than 6'2".
The junior middleweight division is weak and doesn't grant any big fights ... he has the frame to hold 160+ pounds and still be effective. He already does a **** ton of work in the gym and spars with guys much bigger than him and who probably are more aggressive than Pavlik ... of recent note Glenn Johnson. I'm sure that Williams' chin holds up ... and his power would enhance with the added weight as long as he does the right things during training. As much as I like Kels ... and his much improved fight game (defense most of all) ... I can't see him blocking or walking through all those punches that Williams throws for 12 straight rounds. Lets not forget ... Williams has had a fight where he and Margarito threw around 1,000 punches each and did it consistantly for 12 straight rounds - while Pavlik has only went 12 once and him and Jermain had a significantdrop in their workrate.
Williams can fill in as decent sized middle weight. On top of that he has more ability than the vast majority of the current MW's. Only guys who give Pavlik tougher fight at MW might be Abraham & Wright. Good fight.
No of course not moving up in weight doesn't make u past your prime .. But I think its sad that here you have a middle weight who's trying to solitify his status as one of the best guys in the division and the only opponent that they could get is a welter ..A guy who is physically smaller right now and who has fought smaller men for his entire pro career ..If Paul had made the graduel step to jr middle and has had some success then I could see some justification ..But what the hell would this prove ? Ok so Kelly knocks him out his fans cream their pants but then what ? What would a win over a current welter weight belt holder do for his legacy ? I wonder if the same people who use give flack to Hopkins for fighting smaller guys will do the same for Kelly .. I personally never want to hear another word about Joe's decision to fight a past his prime fighter in Jones when Kelly decides to fight Paul ..Wonder whats next will Pavlik get the winner of Cotto Margarito ?
I heard that brutha! But, given the circumstances, who is he suppose to fight? Calzaghe ducked him and Joe was THE ONLY reason Pav would have moved up at this time. Arthur is not available until the first of next year, and Winky (surprise, surprise) priced him self out. They couldn't work a deal with Mora because of Mora's obligation to Forrest. And a Mora fight wouldn't be any better than Williams. So, WTF?
Let's go ahead and talk about Paul Williams and Joe Calzaghe for a moment. One guy has the balls of a rhinocerous. The other recently grew feathers, webbed feet, and a bill. Can you guess who is who? Williams, the smaller man, challenged Pavlik. Pavlik is willing to take the challenge. Slappy Joe, the larger man, challenged Pavlik multiple times. When Pavlik said yes, Joe said "Quack, Quack, Quack." In my book that makes Williams a far more admirable fighter than your boy with the bill.
Inside 7 rounds? Pavlik MUST stop Williams inside 7, or even quicker. There is a sense in which this fight puts Pavlik in the same postition he was in with Lockett. Let me explain. Before the Lockett fight a number of posters predicted a mid rounds KO. I said no ****ing way. Pavlik MUST take Lockett out inside 5 rounds. Sometimes it's not just who you beat, but also how you beat them that matters. If Williams can make the distance, or even make it past 8 rounds in a competetive fight, the whole boxing world will claim that Pavlik got exposed by a welterweight. Consider what Ouma and Spinks did to Taylor's rep. Unfortunately for Paul, I think Pavlik will be fully aware that he has to blow Williams out early and in brutal fashion.
I'm just focusing on the over all effect of the fight. Williams wil almost certainly end up at 160 with or without a Pavlik fight. If Paul stepped up and beat say Duddy and then Zuniga, and then fought Pavlik we would have a much more meaningful fight. However, with Williams going straight from Quintana at 147 to Pavlik at 160 I think Kelly has to absolutely dominate him, and absolutely NOT let him get past 7 rounds.
Arum has thrown out soooooo many names and there is no word. I'm willing to just wait and see before I even think about it.
This is ridiculous, any site confirming this?, why the hell would Williams move all the way up to MW when he has far more options at WW? It's not like his chances are big here, this is a death wish.
It's on a few sites. their source is Max Boxing. Personally I would love to see Allan Green in with Pavlik. First time that dumb mother****er looks down at his feet, BANG, next stop the nearest hospital!
