It looks like everybodies 0 has been going straight out the window the past year (Hatton, Diaz, Williams, Alcine, Cotto, Pavlik), although you have to give Williams credit for coming back and avenging his loss in spectaculor fashion. So I'm sure we all know that Williams can fight at middleweight (although Kolle or w/e wasn't much competition) and we know that his size will not be a disadvantage going Welter to Middle (like ODLH vs B-Hop?). So what do you think will happen if Pavlik and Williams ever step into the squared ring? Pavlik no longer has the invincible-aura around him anymore and we know that good foot movement, angles and SMARTS is the key to beating Pavlik. If you stand straight infront of him or go straight backwards, you'll end up on your back. At the same token, Paul Williams is definately no Nard when it comes to skills and experience and will have a hard time employing a similar plan to B-Hop's as he's not as physically strong, ring savvy nor can he analyze his oppenent's like Nard. I'm sure it's been done before - but seeing Pavlik lose adds a whole new element to this debate and possible outcomes. Remember styles make fights and if Paul Williams can come in with the right style (long jabs to keep him off, quick combinations and constant footwork) he can definately take the fight. The question is - how will P-Will's chin stand up to a heavy puncher like Pavlik? We haven't seen The Punisher hurt badly, even in his loss to Quintana and the constant pressure of Margarito, but Pavlik is no welterweight and that right hand is a BOMB when it lands. I honestly think this fight would have great entertainment value, The Punisher trying to box the first half of the fight then giving in to a war with Pavlik when he gets tired of moving OR gains some confidence. Opinions? .... Oh and just to make it clear, I don't think this fight should happen NOW, Pavlik is ready for Williams but I think Williams needs to face some tough competition at Middleweight to really test out his will and chin at that weight.
Pavlik should've took this fight instead of Hopkins. I still got Pavlik though the fight will be closer thanks to Hopkins laying out the blueprint.
It don't matter what blueprint you've got if you don't have the attributes to effectively implement it. Williams would get murdered in this fight. He's sloppy, and open to straight punches down the middle.
William's fight plan is basically Double Jab + Right... sound familiar? Williams being a soughpaw also eats right hands with his chin-first defensive approach. I'll give Williams that he is much better on the inside then Pavlik and may be much faster in hand-speed, possibly even to test Pavlik's chin, but as far as I can tell that's about it.
If the fight happened now, then I think Pavlik all the way. That's not the case though but i think these guys are on a path to meet by, lets say, early to mid 2010. We'd have to see how they've progressed to call the winner.
Yeah, I know that Pavlik would pretty much murder Williams now. But I think if Williams decides to drop the welterweight division for good (how long can he keep it up?) and fights 2-3 fights at Middleweight against at least one contender, we'll see exactly what he's made of and what he can bring to the table for Pavlik. I think Pavlik is a naturally bigger guy and a bigger puncher, but I'm not sure if he's physically stronger then Williams. Give Williams some time at middle, let's see how good his footwork is when he's not as dehydrated and you never know, he might shock the world like Hopkins!
williams is not a double jab right hand fighter...he throws combos non stop from the outside and can fight on the inside
I like Pavlik by late stoppage being after being behind on the cards. I don't think Williams defense is good enough to win this fight. I would like to see PW unify 154 and clean up that mess first. :good
Sure, in the Future Pavlik's going to have to develope a plan b,c and d.....but paul isn't slick enough to get away from plan A. Or at least he has never shown to be. So I don't see how he wins this fight.
In this video PTP talks about the Pavlik/Hopkins fight and goes on to briefly talk about a fight between himself and Pav. He also answers questions about his upcoming fight with Phillips and the rumored Clottey fight. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_HkQs5mnNw
Williams has had physical advantages over everyone he has fought so far, against Pavlik he wont, Id expect Kelly to stop Williams in the second half of the fight.
