From what I’ve read from over the years, Roy’s team made Collins an offer in 1996. But Collins wasn’t interested at the time, as he was busy with Benn twice. It was reported that Collins and his team then offered Roy around $2m for a fight early the following year, in 1997. However, Roy was already in camp for Griffin, and already up at LHW. Then after the DQ, Roy was only interested in a rematch. Then by the time Roy had beaten Griffin in the rematch, Collins was in camp to fight Joe Calzaghe. Then shortly afterwards, Collins withdrew at the last moment and then retired for 2 years. He then came back in 1999, again wanting to fight Roy. But HBO didn’t want to air the fight, as they wanted an undisputed LHW fight with Roy and Reggie Johnson. Collins then had a fight lined up on Calzaghe’s undercard, when Joe fought Ricky Thornberry, on his Showtime debut. However, Collins collapsed in training, and was then advised to retire permanently by a doctor. Collins then retired, and Roy beat Reggie Johnson. There is no evidence that Roy ever ducked Steve Collins.
Yep. There's a lot of "Jones didn't face x and x, so he obviously ducked them". But when one points out that Hearns didn't face x and x, then the indignant response is "That doesn't mean he ducked them!". Not much of this discussion has made sense so far.
I dont what to say other than no Benn, no McClellan, No Collins, wheer .. I know your excuses/reasons for missing, He just missed and the 168 resume is LACKING to put it lightly. where do you have RJJ all time p4p? and what happened with Eubank?
But as I'm pointing out now for the third time, Hearns made the decision to go back down to 154 in 1986, but to face Medal not McCallum. How is that less of a duck/cherry pick than Jones not facing Collins?
Exactly. He hasn’t in any way being objective. BTW, Roy didn’t make huge money at SMW, but he made $4.5m against Hill in 1998. That was huge money back then in the LHW division.
McClellan had his last fight three months after Jones beat Toney. Where do you mean the window was for them at 168? There's a better case for a meet at MW, but it's hard to say that Jones cherry picked after Hopkins. Tate, Malinga and then Toney.
Naming guys who Roy didn’t fight does not mean that he ducked them. We could ask where Mugabi, McCallum and whoever he missed, were on Hearns’ resume. Anybody can do that.
Hearns went up and down in weight for 18 years .... and he was fighting other ATG's in their prime ? and Roy? who are his ?
You didn't anser my simple question. Why was it less of a cherry pick to face Medal instead of McCallum than anything Jones did at 168? McCallum called for the fight and he was known to have given Hearns all he could handle in sparring when they were stable mates and it would be a unification. How is that better than Jones not facing Collins, who also called for him? Either you finally answer this or we shut this down.
Ok. As for that, I don't know why it didn't happen and would have liked it to, But Jones was keeping busy with good fights, at least. And again, a fight not happening does not automatically mean that Jones ducked x more than Hearns did.
I’ve never really given much thought to where I rank Roy to be honest. Because it depends what criteria you’re using. And when you get to the top 50, they’re all pretty interchangeable/on a similar level really. I only really focus on a top 10, with guys like Greb and Robinson. Roy wouldn’t be in my top 10. But like Floyd, I’d rate him pretty high on H2H ability, specifically looking at his prime. Regarding Eubank, a fight was never really viable. Roy had done nothing at MW until he’d split from his father and signed with HBO. By the time he’d beaten Hopkins at MW for the vacant IBF belt, Eubank was at SMW. Roy then moved up to SMW at the end of 1994. Then in 1995, Eubank lost twice to Collins and had moved out of the division. Eubank has also said that he never chased Roy down, that it would have been suicide fighting him in his prime, and that he was just content to defend his WBO title on his SKY/ITV contracts.
That’s fine. But you have repeatedly called Roy a cherry picker. Therefore, the onus is on you to provide some sort of evidence to back it up.
