So how does this affect your rating of Williams?

Not at all really. What's understated about him - partly due to his being overated (for me) as a hitter - is his accuracy and skill in weaving punches. He's still a great composite puncher for me, just not a the mammoth knockout artist he's often made out to be on the forum.

I'd never call him a knockout artist, because I don't think he was allowed to be. Bottom line for me, a top five puncher of all time when on form.

    At lightweight.

He'd get nowhere near my top 10 all time punchers. I was thinking the other day if he'd get near the top 30.

You need to watch the Gatica fight. I don't even need to be biased to say it's the most precise punching at lightweight I've seen and perhaps in all divisions.

One knockout just wouldn't turn that corner. I uploaded Cokes battering Willie Ludick the other day, and that film also contains some of the sharpest most hurtful punches you can see on film - that doesn't turn Cokes into something he isn't. Would certainly love to see that fight though.

**** you. Cokes wasn't a notorious puncher, Williams was. Gatcia confirms this. Actually, thinking about it, the Cokes stoppage wasn't in the Williams-Gatica league.

Of course not. So what? The point still stands. One genuinely impressive KO that you have not previously seen does not suddenly massively enhance the standing of a given puncher, to the tune of great hitter to top five puncher, for example. Why would it? One fight is just one fight and one KO is one KO. You've attacked me for putting to much stock in his failure to put away two guys he was having free shots at in two given examples on film, but seem to throw a huge amount of stock into this one example because it re-affirms what Carmen Basilio told you (namely that Williams hit harder than Robinson - which we both know is silly anyway).

And Beau Jack, and Kid Gavilan, and numerous other sportswriters and boxers of the time. Don't make it sound like I'm the one being silly - you must be the first person I've come across who's questioned Williams' power to such a degree, and your basis is that he took a few too many punches to stop his opponent. It is well documented and recognised that he was a very hard puncher, so you must be saying that all that is a bit wrong.

Indirectly you're criticising Williams' punching as a whole, not just power, because otherwise he'd have stopped more fighters, correct?

1 - How he looks on film

2 - The knockouts he actually scored in his career.

    3 - Contemporary reports.

What other things should i be considering? Of course I look at film. Of course I look at his record. You want to weigh #3 to an excessive degree in my opinion.

There are myriad factors opposing the ones you listed.

For how he looks on film, consider that it's unfortunate that we don't get to see his more definitive finishes, just like we don't get to see Henry Armstrong's - but going by his record, we know Armstrong was a nasty puncher.

Which takes us to Williams' lack of great knockout percentage, but then throwing us into disarray is the notion of carrying opponents, not trying and whatever.

Then there are contemporary reports which all point to Williams being a massive hitter. The opposition is how much you believe them.

Even so, you don't think that the filmed evidence points to Williams being one of the greatest punchers when on top form? That's madness. Very rarely will you see a battering like the one inflicted on Jack, and I doubt you'll find one to rival the blitz on Gatica. His breaking of Bratton would surely work in Williams' favour, too.

I think it was McVey who said he'd seen the third Bolanos fight. That may add weight to either argument.

    "When on top form".

Who knows? I do know that based upon the available film and the man's record, labelling him a top 5 puncher of all time seems way excessive and the type of over-egging i'm talking about. Earnie Shavers has a far better case.

1 - Can be seen on film decimating many opponents. Impossible to imagine him beating a defenceless opponent without moving him or breaking him down.

    2 - A much MUCH higher KO%

3 - Similar testimonies by press and fighters to his hitting power as those enjoyed by Williams - but maybe a little more realistic?

So in short, you disregard everything I've given you about restrictions on Williams' career, and the contemporary accounts of his power.

That is a very brave statement.
Certainly top 5 at lightweight,I don't actually think there have been that many, among those that held the crown.

    Williams
    Jenkins
    Arguello
    Rosario
    Duran

    No. That's totally incorrect.
