I tried explaining the P4P concept to my girlfriend and she had no idea. she couldnt understand that a guy at 140lbs could be higher on the list than a guy at 200lbs. i think i ****ed up the explaination to be fair how would you describe the P4P to a non boxing fan?
i described it as 'imagine mike tyson was put into a shrinking machine and he came out in the exact same proportions but he weighed 140lbs, he then fought a guy at 140lbs and beat him, then he would be higher on the list than the guy he fought! she looked at me like i was on crack : )
To be fair, if you explained that to someone who had a basic understanding of the sport, it would have been ok. But to a girl who has no interest in boxing what so ever, it's always going to be a difficult task to successfully explain what pound-for-pound is. I mean, we have fans here on ESB that don't even understand it properly!
Well lately p4p is so stupid to me, its more of a what have you done for me lately type of ranking nowadays. I view p4p as who's simply better than who regardless of size. But to help you explain it to your gf who probably doesn't know. Just say imagine if bruce lee fought some 7ft 300lbguy who couldn't fight but was just big and strong. Now the 7ft guy would probably bodyslam the **** outta Bruce Lee due to sheer size and power, but that doesn't mean he's a better fighter than Bruce Lee.
Who has the best skills and the best recent wins regardless of weight. Or if you really want to get the point across, show her a really bad big fighter, (Butterbean, Valuev, etc.) and some footage of a great little fighter, (Pacquiao, Floyd, etc.) and ask who is the better fighter. Not who would win if they fought, but who is the better and more skilled fighter.
tell her its a bull**** concept that means nothing and something many boxing fans waste hours of there lives discussing!
atsch I knew one of you would say that... OBVIOUSLY,thats not the point. Notice that this example is for a guy explaining P4P to his girlfriend. And the general perception of most people as well as it been common knowledge and well documented that Bruce Lee was a very skilled martial artist. Therefore making it easier for someone like her to understand. I'm not going to get in the whole Bruce Lee argument. But please refrain from commenting on my posts unless you think about what you're going to say before you say it.
