Whats wrong with fighters beating Floyd past his best class? Should Floyd lose would that hurt him a lot? I don't think so, you are talking a natural Lightweight up at 147/154
Hatton was the smaller man in his fight with Mayweather. Mayweather also looked to be the stronger man despite the fact that he is not known for his strength. Mayweather is comfortable at WW in my view, although I agree he is above his best weight and I agree he could still make lighter weights (although I think he would struggle a bit to do 130 now) and that that has to be taken into consideration. But I do feel that an unavenged loss at 147 would probably exlude him from overhauling guys like Robinson, Greb, Duran and Ali, yes.
Especially if he doesn't fight. But you may be right. Cotto will be interesting of course, should it happen.
I'd take Robinson over Hearns, even though Hearns would outbox him handily if that was the pace of the fight. It wouldn't be in my opinion, as Hearns wasn't exactly hard to lure into a brawl. And with fighters with this kind of speed, power, and tenacity, the chin is usually the prevailing factor, and Robinson's chin far outdoes Hearns's. And for one of your earlier picks, I'd pick Floyd over Ike Williams based on styles, as great as Ike was, if there was a type of fighter he struggled with, it was a slick boxer who wouldn't force him to get into a fight, because if you did that with Ike, you were toast. He'd beat a guy like Armstrong, but I doubt he'd beat someone like Mayweather, though the bout would be better at 135.
Well we really have no idea how good he is P4P because we haven't seen his style tested against another great Prime fighter. Jones proved his status against a prime BHop and Toney. Sugar Ray against Hearns, Duran and Hagler. Floyd brought up Hatton from 140lbs, and is fighting an inactive and way past his best Hoya. Lets see what he does against Cotto.
A few points 1. I don't even consider Floyd's ATG great status until he retires for real. 2. Please stop with the Hatton was the smaller man nonsense. He is only smaller in height barely. Hatton has never weighed 130 since the 1st day he stepped on a scale and it said 131. 3. Cotto has all the tools to beat Floyd but I just don't see it happening. Cotto is a bigger, stronger, more skilled, and smarter fighter than Castillo but Floyd is even smarter now than he was back then. 4. Nobody I've ever seen is beating him at 130 which is his prime weight. There would be some great scraps though. 5. Forrest gets way too much credit for beating Shane twice. Shane is a great fighter but his idea of defense is to retaliate when he gets hit. A lot of good points have been made in this thread though especially by Brooklyn, KG, BigReg, Sweet Pea, Walk With Me, Beware, and even a couple by Amsterdam and he despises Floyd.
Macman this is relevant though. Yes Floyd started lighter and yes he could still be fighting at 140lbs and maybe would be better off. I don't think Hatton is the naturally bigger man because they have different body types but Hatton certainly isn't smaller. But the important thing to realize is that at a point when the welterweight division is at its deepest in a couple of decades maybe, Floyd is recognized as the champ....only he isn't fighting welterweights. Hatton said so himself that he isn't suited for WW after the Collazo fight. He then looked not-so-good against Urango. Rather then fight one of the top welterweights, Floyd fought Hatton. For whatever reasons.
I don't despise floyd at all. I think he has all-time great skills but I do despise what he is doing with his career. He is in a position to really do great things for his legacy and the sport of boxing and he isn't. Thats all.
I feel you but if you were Floyd would you go down to 140 to fight Hatton just because Hatton said 140 is better for him? Remember this is the same Hatton that said he wasn't ready for Floyd when Floyd was at 140. I'm not saying you despise Floyd I know you don't. Amsterdam does though. Also it says a lot about Floyd to be stronger than Hatton when everybody knows Floyd's best weight was 130 and he could still be there now if he never had moved up.
I don't really blame him for fighting Hatton because ALOT of people thought Hatton would beat him and was one of his toughest challenges. I would have rather seen him fight a welterweight though. I think if you look deeply, Hatton was a PERFECT matchup actually and he knew this going in.
Floyd is smaller than Hatton naturally. Floyd has put on a lot of muscle but naturally Hatton is bigger.
My prediction: (or better – my wish) Cotto beats Gomez then fights the winner of Cintron vs Margo, which I think will be Cintron. Cotto takes on and beats Cintron later this year Cotto then faces PBF early next year for a mega fight paying each fighter millions. So although we can all get on PBF for not fighting the best right now, we have to consider that PBF may be building interest by letting these guys duke it out to see who the last man standing is. (The best) When that is determined, I think he will step in and take that fight and it should be his last. IF this happens and PBF accomplishes this by beating the best of the best then retires he will then be an ATG.
