Armstrong has too many losses in his prime at his best weight to make top 5 ATG

    For all time lists....

P4P- lean heavy towards talent and H2H, with resume and accomplshments being a smaller part (75/25) ratio. Since we are talking about who the best fighters are regardless of weight if they had fought all at the same weight.

ATG- H2H, Talent, Resume, and accomplishments. I lean towards the latter with this list in a 60/40 ratio.

I rank Hagler ahead of Jones on an ATG list, but not a P4P list as an example.

Too many losses in his prime? No, you're confused. While Armstrong's prime was shorter lived than others, his reign from about 1936 to 1940, and his three year streak at 61-0 I believe with 59 KO's, is unbelievable. You could argue at those peak years he was the best, more dominant than any of them.

He lost some in his earlier days and some in his later days, with some good wins as well, but in his peak years, he was phenomenal.

I think you could argue he was better than anyone but Robinson at his peak. 123-1-1 is more impressive to me than even 61-0. Just my opinion.

That's one way to do it, I personally don't distinguish, my P4P ATG lists are based on a combination of all factors.

    -Resume/Accomplishments
    -In Ring Performance/Dominance
    -Head to Head Ability

    In order of descension.

:good 128-1-2 if we're going a bit further. Then again Willie Pep was 134-1-1, which is better than either. I think a lot has to do with competition and how you dominated as well.

Given that he lost 4 of his first 16 fights, how was Armstrong ever 123-1-1??

I was guessing, didn't even know I was that close lol...

Do you know Greb's peak record? His comp was crazy, perhaps better than all of them.

That would be SRR, not Armstrong, that was being referred to.

His competition was in my opinion, the best of all time, his wins resume is deeper than them all. I have a list of his top competition. Some seem like lesser names, but I assure you, every guy I list was a top notch fighter and contender or titlist. And the top names (Tunney, Loughran, Walker, Gibbons, etc) are among the best top wins of the era, or any really. His losses are a bit more spread out then some of the other top names though, he was more consistent.

    Delaney x3
    Rosenbloom
    Walker
    Wilson x3
    Tunney x2
    Loughran x5
    Slattery
    Flowers
    Moody
    Downey
    Bogash
    Gibbons x3
    Smith x7
    Norfolk
    Gunboat Smith x2
    McTigue x2
    Levinsky x6
    M. Gibbons
    Meehan x2
    Houck x3
    Miske x3
    Bartfield x4
    McGoorty
    McCoy x2
    Dillon x2
    O’Dowd
    Chip x2
    Crouse
    Brennan x3
    Clark
    Blackburn

  13. 1. Calzaghe
    2. Robinson
    3. Marciano

This is why I lobby to seperate era when we do all time lists. I knew alot of those names, but not all. Greb is often overlooked for greatest MW of all time, much less overall. Anyways, he has more top notch wins than fighters in this era have fights. It's not possible to do this anymore....
