Look I know Harry greb cheerleader's gonna get mad at me in the replies, but I think p4p list need to be more favored for all eras not just the ones from the past.
I not saying you cant rank greb on your p4p list I'm saying there are to heavily favored for fighters from the past, even you as a floyd fan probably thought this too. The reason I made this post is because I just saw a list and floyd or manny wasn't ranked top 30
The old fighters are held to high standards because they fought so much and took on all comers. I understand what you're saying but that's the way it is. But if you want to breakdown an atg list by eras or decades then you can do that.
I think it's that way for a reason though, not to be argumentative but the old folks have seen so many fighters that they have been exposed to more than we (the fresher set of eyes). I started watching boxing about the Lennox Lewis era. I used to watch old fights, but essentially if you grew up in black and white television as a kid, those kinda guys set the precedent! It's like the saying a welterweight is a welterweight (147 pounds) but to an aside there are some pretty damn good new school fighters that belong on that echelon, such as Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather that the op alluded to.
The bank robber Willie Sutton was asked, "Why do you rob banks?, he replied because that's where the money is" The reason there's so many fighters highly ranked in pound for pound ratings from long older eras is,,,,that's where the truly great fighters are.
P4p lists (current or all time) tho fun are fictional & a concept essentially to make fans of small (usually American) fighters still feel superior to the big boys who are more often than not EE or UK fighters recently.. ppl make way too much of it... the truth is the elite of the HWs , CWs & LHWs etc are the top dogs of the sport & would beat everyone else in REALITY.. P4P is the alternate reality that Inoue & Canelo & Crawford etc fans rely on to be the supposed best fighter in boxing... dont get me wrong I partake in it too & some of these elite smaller fighters can mix it at the higher weights to an extent (Canelo for instance) but it's not to be taken that seriously
Just a thought : do you think an element of it is how reachable modern fighters are? Like, how great can Floyd Mayweather be if I, a truck driver from England, could contact him directly through social media? Or know what he had for breakfast, or how much he's thinking of spending on a new watch? Same as movie stars, a dying breed, they're so accessible now that a lot of star power is gone, and instead of being an event worthy of hype, fights just kinda feel routine outside of the genuinely huge ones, because we have access to the fighters thoughts and feelings during camp all the way up to the day of the fight? Or am I talking out my arse?
Those from the past used to fight a lot more, many of them lived while there were no PEDs and some of them had a job to work, it wasn't boxing that is their full-time employer. I see the reason, not the nostalgia, that puts some from past eras in P4P. But P4P is itself totally idiotic - are apples better than pears or... cucumbers even? Your comment about Greb's fans is totally out of place. It is not even about his fans because even if Greb has no fans, his career achievements are insane.
The P4P list changes over time (as does the ATG list). It takes time for the list to form. It takes time to appreciate the value of a boxer. Example; if the HW ATG list goes like this: 1. Muhammad Ali 2. Joe Louis 3. Larry Holmes 4. Lennox Lewis ... as time goes on IMO Lennox Lewis will become HW ATG #3 (with some boxing fans Lewis is already HW ATG #3).
If Greb could be brought back today, in his prime, he wouldn't beat the Broner of today. These guys were primitive and undeserving. They were still figuring out how to use weights without losing speed and endurance. It's really insane, compared to today. Modern training and nutrition? Strategy? No, Greb and guys like that are just genuinely not good. I have seen footage of him and it looks like my son playing with those giant toy gloves. It's really nuts that this is what they called the sweet science back then. Greb makes notoriously cavemanlike Marciano look like Sweat Pea. I'm not saying he wasn't a cool guy or a G for his day, but p4p, I can't even take the guy seriously compared to modern fighters.
