I was never a champion, but P4P no one hit any harder. In my 75 wins I flattened 65 opponents. I won a Purple Heart when I was wounded 16 times in battle, came home and was a punching sensation being groomed for a title match, until I was kod by an alltime great future champion...Who was I ?
Tommy Gomez ! Danny Nardico was also reported to have won the purple heart, though boxrec says he won the silver star. And Nardico is the only man to knock down Jake LaMotta, so he must have have hit pretty hard too.
Yes U, tommy gomez oif Tampa, Florida...Only 182 pounds hit probably harder than rocky Marciano, but Rocky had inhuman stamina, combined with a concrete chin....Oh what a fight they would have waged !
Yes dougie, your memory serves you right...It was Tommy Gomez who was being groomed for a title shot until in 1946 at MSG ,my dad and I first saw the coming champion Jersey Joe Walcott, outmaneuver and tko the 10lb smaller Tommy Gomez...Gomez was wounded in Europe SIXTEEN times and survived and received a Purple Heart, and still became a great knockout puncher with 65 kos in 75 wins...There is a HERO, not a Clay/Ali...I still remember the Walcott ko of brave Tommy Gomez....cheers D. P.S. How our values have changed, and NOT for the better !
