There's been loads of talk about how hatton in particular (and now it looks like sky too) are painting the p4p title as being transferable and will go to hatton if he beats pac man. This has taken a load of flack from posters but my question is why? (and this is not as a hugger of nuts) If pac man is #1 and gets beat, surely the man that beats him has the most right of any fighter to go #1 (as long as the weight difference is not ridiculous). If hatton beats him, but marquez moves to 1, doesn't that imply that pac being #1 was some kind of mistake in the hindsight of a loss? why would losing to hatton make marquez better than pac man? it wouldn't. hatton beating pac would only show that hatton beats pac at 140 (which if pac is comfortable at 140 would mean p4p too). Obviously there are issues of form, weight, age etc that influence how the top fighters are compared and i also believe that describing p4p as a title is stupid. And i know that p4p is a bit silly anyway, and that some people believe that this is all irrelevant since pac will win. But for some reason the p4p does gather interest and debate from fight fans. personally i think that people shouldn't bash hatton for thinking he might become the future p4p #1 by beating the current p4p #1, any other top ten fighter would think the same thing. would be interested to hear any thoughts on the issue. sorry for long text
I think having moved through a range of weghts an beaten top fighters at them all counts for something and JMM has done that whereas Hatton hasn't. I also think that style wise Marquez would be a more difficult match up for Hatton than Pac-man will be. I give Hatton a better chance of beating Pac than I would of beating Maruez but I know that's too subjective to count or much. Different people seem to have diferent criteria for what constitutes P4P ability, I always think good technical boxers should be rated higher than good brawlers but I know what you're saying, based on the man who beat the man criteria you could argue that if Hatton beats Pac, Pac has already beat Marquez so Hatton should be higher than Maruez. I don't really agree with it though.
I kinda hear what you saying. they would want to move Marquez #1 if Pacquaio loses but Pacquaio droped him 4 times in 2 fights. no way is Marquez better than Pacquaio, so I get you saying. ppl need to understand that Hatton is no cupcake and hes been the best at that weight for the last 4 years. good thread, I dont know what I would do. if Hatton does win I dont think hes p4p but Marquez isnt, and Pacquaio isnt because he just lost, hmmmmm Mayweather is P4P IF HATTON WINS!!! HAHAHA
nonsense the p4p idea isn't transferable.the idea is that if all boxers were physically the same(size reach etc) who would win. for example if ivan calderon fought tomasz adamek calderon would easily handle him.
I agree that since Pac can no longer make 135 he is now a 140 pound fighter. If he is beaten then Pac must go below the man who defeated him. I also dont agree that JMM has a better chance of beating Hatton. I get the feeling that JMM is on the slide and would be much easier to hit than Pac. JMM had a great fight against Diaz but he bullied and hit a lot. Hatton would be stronger and would hit harder. I'd put Hop above Hatton, Pac and JMM in the event of a Hatton victory. Pac remains number 1 if he wins obviously
Some people would dispute that it is purely a H2H thing, most people believe achievements play a part - so you can be the most skillful boxer in the world but if you never raise your game to the world level then there is no way that anyone could put you as P4P #1.
hmm says he doesn't think it's right to say Hatton will be #1 P4P if he beats Pac. Did Tarver become #1 after he beat RJJ? It's all hype to promote the fight. Otherwise, this mythical p4p title should be challenged and fought for by the top p4p people on the list (challenge by ranking but then how would you make the list?). In addition, P4P is decided on a consensus over the fighter's quality and value in different weight classes. Hatton has been fighting in the same weight class for a long time now whilst Pac has been jumping around in a short period of time.... plus he's been #2 on the list behind PBF for so long. Imo, I don't see the logic of Hatton jumping up as p4p #1.. it pretty much overlooks Pac's accomplishments and others behind him easily.
I also think that Hopkins would become a more popular choice if Hatton wins but unless you currently have Hopkins rated above JMM then it makes a bit of a nonsense of it that a LHW should jump above a lightweight when neither of them are fighting because of a result at light-welterweight. No-one would put Taylor above Hopkins despite beating him twice. Pac losing to Hatton could just be seen by some as Pac being on the slide and not the fighter that beat JMM anymore. Regarding Marquez and Hatton, I just think Marquez is too good a counter puncher and could cope with Hattons bullying, if someone disagrees it's not something I'd get worked up about though.
P4P is, always was and ever will be about the wins/performances vs. recent quality opposition. If you take the current top3, it's like this: PacMan: close/debated win over Marquez, David Diaz the WBC LW champ, lower top10, DLH, lower top10 SWW (not ranked at WW) JMM: close/debated loss to PacMan, win over LW World Champ Casamayor, top contender Juan Diaz Hopkins: close/debated loss to P4P#2-3 Calzaghe, win over #5, MW world champion Pavlik Hatton can't compete with that at the moment, although he beat #1 LWW contender Malignaggi in convincing fashion and 15 month have passed since his loss to Floyd. So, it's quite logical that a close win over PacMan wouldn't rocket him on the top of the lost from his #7-8 position. BUT! If Hatton somehow manages to win by big knockout against all odds and expert predictions, he'll definitely surpass JMM, because against the same opposition and P4P#1, he'd look MUCH better. He'd surpass recently 1-1 Hopkins too, but you know as I've said, P4P is about recent quality wins and performances, so if Hopkins can beat world CW champ Adamek, he'll obviously take over. Or if PacMan stops LWW champ Hatton, he'll be a VERY strong #1. Or if JMM beats another quality opponent, he could get on the top of the list (I feel he deserves it already). So considering Hatton being P4P#1 IF a dramatic knockout or blowout happens vs. the current top guy, in not unreasonable with Vazquez, Marquez, Mosley and JMM not having a scheduled fight for the near future and the Hopkins-Adamek will probably happen in July.
Guys, the rankings at 135, last I saw them for Ring had JMM as Champ and Manny Pac as either #1 or #2.....@ 135!! due to the respective competition (who held what titles, etc.)....BUT, they also had Manny Pac as the P4P #1. So just because Hatton (lets say he wins) beats Pac @ 140, does not make him P4P #1. If Hatton was currently sitting in the top 3-5, and demolished Pac, then probably. It would def. bump Hatton back up into the top 7 or so though.
I already consider Hop to be NO 2 behind Pac. I agree that a Pac loss could be seen as him being on the slide. We therfor must make a new P4P list rating fighters on their current ability and not what they achived in the past. There is a good chance that JMM counter punching would cause Hatton big problems especially late on if Ricky is exhausted, like we've seen before
