again, you are missing the point. If DLH wanted to come in at 153, then thats on him. The issue here is an opponent MANDATING that a fighter come in under the limit. The welterweight division is from 141-147 pounds. No fighter, not even Manny, is important enough to redefine the division from 141-145. Not in a title fight. This issue is bigger than one fight. I wonder if Cotto had told Clottey or Margo that they had to make 145 in a WW title fight if everyone would still feel the same. I sure doubt it...... If Mosley challenges Williams, but makes him come in at 145 is that ok too?
catchweights are common before and they are common now. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3238297
what you tend to forget is nobody is making Cotto do anything. Cotto can say NO!! so if he says YES, then his title is on the line. if Mosley said come in at 145 and Williams said yes the thats on him, but if Williams had a WW title it would be on the line because he can weight from 141-147 and fight for the title. if Cotto says yes to 145 then his title is on the line, if he didnt want his title on the line then tell Pac to fight at 147 or fight Mosley but its obvious he wants a Pac fight.
hmm says... TY for that link! shiet! Just imagine if catchweights never existed; we'ld never get to witness some of boxing's spectacular match-ups. We'ld just be talking "what if" and dreaming.... This goes for future fights as well. And remember, boxing needs great fights like this. If Cotto says 145 then wtf not? Complain to team Cotto for believing they can make and take Pac at 145 and trying to at least even the match.
My arguement is that the rules and weight limits of a particular weight division should not be up for debate by Manny, Cotto, or ANY fighter. If you want to fight for a WW title, than your opponent may weigh up to 147. Thats the rules. If you want to mandate a weight of 145, then fine, but no title. And just because something has been done before doesnt make it right.
You are right and wrong at the same time. You got the limits right. But the point is the boxer is allowed to weight whatever he wants as long as he stays between the lines. IT IS WRONG to imposed extra limits to the fighter. Even worst when that fighter is the Champ. You want the belt come and get it. The limit is 147lbs, not 145lbs. But I guess money talks!!!!! When Calderon fought Cazares there was a limitation to how much Cazares could go up in weight until 8AM of the day of the fight. Still, the rumor is Cazares was 20 pounds heavier than Calderon by the time the fight started. In this case, it was Cazares who wanted to fight Calderon.
ok i can see your point here but as we all know, stranger things in boxing happens. we have a fighter being awarded a championship without actually fighting at all so what can the WBO do if they saw that pac would be fighting for their belt? they must be seeing dollar signs already. also, cotto wants to put his belt on the line, maybe for bargaining purposes. it's not as if they are breaking any rules.
well, half of them were title fights too. so, it just proves that title fights also do occur at catchweights within the weight limit of a weight class. it's just that when a catchweight fight specifically involves pac there is such an uproar while for others there isn't. hmm... why is that? :think
HAHA. if it was done before then it can happen again. so Hopkins and DLH wasnt a title fight??atsch I know how you feel but if Cotto agrees then thats whats gonna happen. if you dont want to see Pac win a WW title then see if you can get in touch with Cotto and tell him to fight Mosley then for unfied and lineal champ!!
its got nothing to do with Pac. I was equally against it when DLH and Hops did it. It was bull**** then, and its bull**** now.
you forgot about the pavlik-taylor rematch, a more recent catchweight fight. how about the more imminent mayweather-jmm catchweight fight which will happen 2 months before pac-cotto?
yeah it can be BS but rules are rules. all you have to do is weight with in the limits and the title is on the line
