The Ring Magazine, "The Bible of Boxing", now lists Pacquiao as the welterweight champ. "Primarily due to the way he dismantled the incredibly brave Miguel Cotto this past Saturday, "Pac-Man" is now recognised by "The Bible Of Boxing" as the world's premiere 147-pounder. Not bad at all for a fighter who turned pro down at 106-pounds, and who has fought just twice at welterweight!" And though some people will no doubt disagree with Ring's selection, it's tough to place any other fighter ahead of Pacquiao at welterweight. Former holder of the top spot (the Ring championship is vacant at 147) Shane Mosley has a loss to the man Pacquiao beat up, in Cotto and "Sugar" has also been inactive since his January win over Antonio Margarito.. While Floyd Mayweather Junior, Pacquiao's most obvious rival at 147, has fought just once, against a lightweight who had moved up in weight, in the past 23-months. As for Paul Williams, he is no longer ranked by Ring at welterweight, due to "The Punisher" having moved up in weight. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=21939&more=1
After hearing this, you know Floyd has got to have severe diarrhea and be clinically depressed. His smoke and mirrors career has just been exposed by the real deal: a 2 foot asian that is nonstop kicking ass.
people tend to forget manny started at 106 when he was 16.... most natural 147 are 106 when they are 16... wtf...
i dont understand this. ring have always said the only way a champ gets removed is to move away from the weight..or get beat. this cant be right, surely.
I think he should be Ring Champ at Welterweight, he was Ring Champ at 140lbs and moved up and beat a good fighter there.
rings own rules.. "Championship vacancies can be filled by winning a box-off between The Ring's number-one and number-two contenders, or, in certain instances, a box-off between our number-one and number-three contenders. The only three occasions when a fighter will lose his championship status are when he retires, moves to another weight division, or is defeated in a championship bout."
i'm still kinda confused though... from the ring.. "Championship vacancies can be filled by winning a box-off between The Ring's number-one and number-two contenders, or, in certain instances, a box-off between our number-one and number-three contenders." so...that hasnt happened..right ? last week no.1 mosley no.2 mayweather no.3 cotto so...can a ring champ move up to the next division up and claim the title in one fight?... i actually dont have a problem with it now that i get my head around it...just wish that the ring would state that scenario along with the other scenarios they list for winning / losing titles.. or maybe they have and i havent seen it.
He is not the Ring Champ floyd retired and the #1 and #2 ranked fighters in the division have yet to fight so the title is vacent. The ring is ranking him as the #1 now. If he fights and beats Mosley he is the champ. Or if floyd were to leap frog Mosley in the rankings and he fought and beat floyd he would be champ.
